State Sen. Betty Karnette (D-Long Beach) honored a permit supervisor

for the city’s building and safety department with the 2004

Outstanding Woman award.

Michele Diaz was selected for her volunteer work in Artesia where

she lives.

Diaz is the president of the city’s Friends of the Library

organization and served on the Artesia planning commission for eight

years. She is also a member of the Beautification Program and a past

member of the Code Enforcement Program.

Middle school students at St. Bonaventure School finished near the

top in a national math competition. As a group, the seventh-graders

finished in eighth place in the pre-algebra division of Mathfax, a

contest for Catholic schools.

In the local Western region, Johnny Richardson took top honors,

followed by fellow St. Bonaventure student Aaron Cetin in second

place. Katherine Mullen finished in eighth place.

In the algebra division, eighth-graders placed 18th nationally. In

regional scores, Karcher Morris finished in ninth place, Melinda

Vogel finished 14th and Lauren Kubeck finished in 19th place. ...

Rick E. Sweetin graduated from the First Term Airman Center at

Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash.

The center helps airmen understand how they fit in at their duty

station. Sweetin is a hydraulic systems apprentice with the 92nd

Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Fairchild and a 2003 graduate of

Ocean View High School, ... Marine Corps PFC Ryan S. Barbour, son of

Magdelena C. Myers of Huntington Beach and Allen S. Barbour, recently

reported for duty with 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, at

Camp Lejeune, N. C. ... Navy Airman Recruit Brian A. Hansen, son of

John M. Hansen of Huntington Beach, recently participated in

Operation Vigilant Resolve while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS

George Washington. During the operation, Strike Fighter Squadron 131

and Carrier Air Wing Seven, launched F/A-18 Hornets from Hansen’s

ship and conducted a 20-millimeter strafing run against an enemy

position and dropped two 500-pound laser guided bombs on another

enemy position in Fallujah, Iraq.
