Coaching openings increase

Corona del Mar High girls basketball coach James Barkalow has stepped
down after two seasons, expanding the list of varsity coaching
openings at Newport-Mesa schools to four.
Barkalow, who was 19-19 at the Sea Kings’ helm, guided CdM to a
7-3 Pacific Coast League record his first season, after taking over
for Elbert Davis, who left to become boys coach at Westminster High.
CdM, which shared second place in the PCL that season, lost in the
first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs to
finish 12-13.
CdM missed the playoffs last season.
Dawn Payne, the Corona del Mar girls athletic director, said the
job may or not include a teaching assignment.
She requests interested applicants to fax a resume to her at
school at (949) 515-6073. Information about the job is available by
phoning (949) 515-6048 and prospective applicants may also contact
Payne by e-mail: [email protected].
The CdM girls opening adds to existing openings with the Estancia
girls program, as well as the boys programs at Estancia and Costa
Mesa.
The search for a new boys and girls coach has stalled at Estancia,
where attempts to advertise the position within the district, the
first step in he hiring process, mandated by the state education
code, has yet to begin.
Estancia athletic directors Tim Parsel (boys) and Nancy Ferda
(girls) said the Newport-Mesa Unified School District office has
requested the postings for the boys and girls basketball coaching
positions be delayed, until funding is obtained for the positions.
