will feature homemade Mexican food, game booths, drawings, music and
a silent auction.

Sun-seekers flock to the sand of Newport Beach
Summer-like weather brought summer-like crowds to the beach
Saturday, as lifeguards readied their forces for the hotter months.
Lifeguard Jim Turner said crowds of about 45,000 to 50,000 were
out at Newport Beach on Saturday, taking advantage of the hot sun and
the cloudless skies, thanks to the windstorm Friday that cleared
everything away.
“Yesterday at this time the wind was blowing from 20 to 27 mph,”
Turner said. “Right now it is at four. I repeat, four. You know, the
number that comes after three.”
Water temperatures rose into the 60s and the surf was at about 2
to 3 feet, he said. With more people in the water, there were a
couple of rescues, he said, including one person who was transported
to Hoag Hospital with possible spinal chord injuries.
“We think they will be OK,” he said.
While the crowd was enjoying fun in the sun, 26 first-year
lifeguards were inside lifeguard headquarters training for their
summer duties, Turner said.
“We’ve got some anxious rookies downstairs,” he said.
Expo with jazz festival coming to Fairgrounds
The Youth Expo is looking for some generous donors who can help
Orange County school children attend the annual celebration at the
Orange County Fairgrounds.
The expo will be held April 30 to May 2. Donations will go toward
bus transportation for deserving schools on April 30.
The expo annually attracts 35,000 visitors and includes a jazz
festival, a talent search and a science and engineering fair. Any
businesses that want to contribute should call Barbara Thompson at
(714) 708-1931.
Fair’s musical concert series keeps on growing
Three more diverse musicians have signed on to play the Orange
County Fair this summer. Jessica Simpson, John Fogerty and Ozomatli
will perform at the Pacific Amphitheatre in July.
Ozomatli performs Latin salsa, hip-hop and jazz-funk. They will
perform on July 16. Fogerty was the leader of the legendary Creedence
Clearwater Revival, then went on to a successful solo career. He was
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 for his work
with Creedence Clearwater Revival. He will perform July 28.
Simpson will perform on July 31. Simpson started her musical
career singing gospel and has been a huge success since she made the
switch to pop music.
Concert ticket prices include fair admission. Tickets can be
purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at
https://www.Ticketmaster.com, by phone at (714) 740-2000 or at the
Pacific Amphitheatre box office.
