Breakers host Lasers in opener
The top-ranked doubles team of brothers Mike and Bob Bryan will make
their home debut for the Newport Beach Breakers July 10 against the
Delaware Smash after World Team Tennis organizers released the
schedule for the upcoming season Thursday.
The Breakers will host the Springfield Lasers at 7 p.m. July 5,
the season’s opening night. Newport will play 14 matches -- seven at
home at the Palisades Tennis Club -- during the three-week season
that runs July 5-25.
Russian star Maria Sharapova, ranked No. 19 in singles as of April
5 and 65th in doubles as of April 12 on the Women’s Tennis
Association Tour, will play two home matches (July 14 and 17).
Monica Seles and the rest of the New York Sportimes visit Newport
July 11.
Dick Leach will coach the Breakers, which include newcomers Ellis
Ferreira, Aniko Kapros, Nana Miyagi and Ramon Delgado, for a second
consecutive season.
The Breakers finished 7-7 last season.
