Letting the leaders do the talking

This year’s National Day of Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the
Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council will feature a twist from
previous years, according to Greg Kelley of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Catholic Church.
“Not only will we be praying for our national, state and local
leaders, but we will be hearing from three elected officials who will
be discussing ‘Reconciling Political Life with Personal Religious
Beliefs,’” Kelley said.
Sharing how their religious beliefs have affected their life as
elected officials at the May 6 prayer breakfast will be Newport Beach
Councilman Steve Bromberg, Costa Mesa Councilwoman Libby Cowan and
Margie Wakeham, retired Irvine school board member.
In addition, representatives of the Sikh, Bahai, Christian,
Jewish, Roman Catholic and Muslim faiths at this truly interfaith
event, will offer prayers and scripture. Last year, more than 40
congregations from 17 faiths and five service clubs attended the
National Day of Prayer Breakfast along with a number of local and
county leaders, Kelley said. Even more are expected this year.
The breakfast is open to the public, regardless of whether you’re
a member of a congregation.
“This is one day when the community comes together to honor and
respect our many different faiths as we pray for our country’s
leaders,” Kelley said.
The breakfast begins at 7:15 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of
the Covenant, 2850 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. The cost is $12.50 per
person, $100 for a table of eight and $200 for a sponsor table of
eight. Reservations can be made by calling (714) 921-8665, ext. 3, or
by e-mail to nmiinterfaith@ aol.com.
ROMAN FEAST
The 31st annual Roman Feast and Charity Auction will be held at 6
p.m. May 6 at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center for the
benefit of the Youth Employment Service of the Harbor area. It’s an
old-fashioned community event where old and new friends mingle with
leaders from Costa Mesa and Newport Beach for fun while supporting
youth employment opportunities. Allan Roeder, Costa Mesa city manager
and Homer Bludau, Newport Beach city manager, will serve as Masters
of Ceremonies, supported by entertainer Darvy Traylor, while guests
dance and bid on silent auction items and enjoy hors d’oeuvres
donated by area restaurants. This year’s honoree is Joan Irvine
Smith, a most remarkable woman in California. Dinner will be served
by the Orange Coast College Airline Travel Careers program and the
UCI Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, according to Dave Calderon,
president of the YES board of directors. Tickets at $40 per person
can be reserved by calling the YES office at (949) 642-0474.
This event sells out each year, so RSVP now.
GOLF FOR FISH
Tom Kelly, football announcer for USC, will be playing in the 6th
annual Golf Classic for the benefit of Friends In Service to
Humanity, being held on May 10 at the Sea Cliff Country Club in
Huntington Beach, Marion Poli said.
“The first three golfers to pony up $450 apiece will have the
pleasure of playing in Kelly’s foursome,” Poli said.
I suspect Poli is looking for three local USC boosters to step up
with $450 each to golf with Kelly.
“Tom is funny, witty and full of great stories and laughs,” Poli
said.
Friends In Service to Humanity is a local nonprofit whose mission
is “preventing hunger and homelessness.” For more details, call Poli
at (949) 515-3815, ext. *228.
