Van Hiel spins no-hitter, 7-0
Corona del Mar High freshman Holly Van Hiel recorded her first
no-hitter, a near-perfect game that came with six strikeouts and no
walks to lead the Sea Kings’ softball team to a 7-0 Pacific Coast
League victory over host Laguna Beach Thursday.
Van Hiel, who went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored, faced
one more than the minimum to help give the Sea Kings (7-6, 1-3 in
league) their first PCL win. Laguna Beach (2-8, 0-3) did not hit a
ball to the outfield, CdM Coach Nichole Thompson said.
Senior catcher Sarah Stern contributed a 4-for-4 performance that
came with two RBIs and a run. Corona del Mar had seven different
runners score. The Sea Kings committed an error in the fourth inning.
Gleason two-hits Irvine
* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High junior Ashley Gleason tossed a
two-hitter with eight strikeouts and was among eight Sailors who had
hits in a 4-1 Sea View League softball win over visiting Irvine
Thursday.
Darci Pennington was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kayleigh Horn was 2
for 3 and scored a run for the winners (8-9-1, 1-3 in league).
Jennifer Gummerman, Julianne Bass, Jessica Knight, Katie Daniels,
Gleason and Clea O’Kieffe also had hits for the Sailors, who scored
singled runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.

Hartwell sparks Eagles
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball remained
undefeated in the Golden West League with a 25-8, 25-18, 25-11
victory over host Saddleback Thursday.
Kris Hartwell led the Eagles (15-1, 9-0 in league) with 12 kills,
while Scott Sankey added nine kills and three aces. Trevor Holmes
amassed 23 assists and Brad Larsen recorded six digs.
Tilsen wins medalist
* GOLF: Ben Tilsen shot two-over-par 35 to earn medalist honors
and lead the Corona del Mar High boys golf team to a 201-226 Pacific
Coast League victory over Laguna Beach at Newport Beach Country Club
Thursday.
Robert Ury was right behind Tilsen with a 38, while Zach
Rabinovich (40), Matt Story (43) and Jamie Bloom (43) also
contributed for the Sea Kings (9-10, 6-2 in league).
CdM outlasts Laguna
* VOLLEYBALL: Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team survived
in the fifth and deciding game over Laguna Beach, 25-23, 21-25,
25-19, 23-25, 15-9, in Pacific Coast League play Thursday night.
Kevin Welch led the Sea Kings with 22 kills and Dominic Robino dished
out 40 assists as CdM improved to 12-7, 5-0 in the PCL.
Newport splits meet
* TRACK AND FIELD: Whitney Blue and Elizabeth Clayton doubled, and
Allison Stokke broke her school record in the pole vault again,
leading the Newport Harbor High girls track and field team to a 94-42
Sea View League victory over host Laguna Hills Thursday.
The Newport boys (2-2 in league), who featured double-winner Keith
Eldridge, lost, 89-46. Eldridge won the 100 and 200 meters in 11.0
and 23.2 seconds, respectively. Blue, a sophomore, won the 1,600
(5:24.5) and 3,200 (12:10.1), while Clayton came in first in the 100
hurdles (16.9) and triple jump (34 feet, 3 inches).
Stokke, a freshman, cleared 11-6 to win the pole vault. The mark
was six inches higher than her previous best. Ciara Lawrence also
improved six inches with her winning throw in the shot put (31-7).
Danica Kalmbach won her first varsity race with a 2:32.6 in the 800,
while Megan Randall (1:03.1 in the 400), Jennifer Ryder (5-0, high
jump) and Jackie Belida (15-11 1/2, long jump) were also victorious
for the Sailors (3-1 in league), who won both relays.
Nick St. Andre won in the 800 (2:07.3) and Beau Taylor grabbed
first place in the discus (143-8) for the Newport boys.
Tars handle Irvine
* GOLF: David Motschenbacher shot even-par 35 and Brandon Sowers
was one over to help lead the Newport Harbor High boys golf team to a
199-225 Sea View League victory over Irvine at Oak Creek Golf Club
Thursday.
Rhett Palmer shot 38, while Chris Willard carded a 40 and Michael
Benvenuti finished with a 41 for the Sailors (9-8, 3-5 league), who
will face Laguna Hills at Big Canyon Country Club Tuesday.
Hembarsky sharp
* SOFTBALL: Sage Hill School sophomore Rebecca Hembarsky pitched
three shutout relief innings to earn the win and was 2 for 5 with
three RBIs to lead the Lightning to an 11-2 Academy League softball
victory Thursday at St. Margaret’s.
Lauren Neal was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and pitched the final three
innings to earn the save for Sage Hill (6-8-1, 2-2 in league).
Eagles defeat Seahawks
* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team moved one step closer to
an unbeaten Golden West League season Thursday by topping visiting
Ocean View, 196-213, at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.
Marcus Sostak earned medalist honors with a 2-under-par 33, while
Nick Lattieri (36), Jason Les (39), Austin Serr (42) and Matt Schlutz
(46) also scored for the Eagles (11-5, 7-0 in league).
OCC players advance
* TENNIS: Orange Coast College sophomore Sabrina Tanamal advanced
to the women’s community college singles Round of 32, defeating
Consumes River’s Sarah Gieseke, 6-0, 6-0, in the 104th Ojai tennis
tournament Thursday.
Tanamal, who had a first-round bye in singles, and sophomore Leah
Becker also moved on to the Round of 32, after winning a match in the
women’s community college doubles division. Becker and Tanamal, the
Orange Empire Conference doubles champions, also had a first-round
bye. They defeated Amila Kauduzodic and Jamie Metcalf of De Anza
College, 6-1, 6-1, to advance.
The Pirates’ Kai Moriyama lost in singles in the first round, 1-6,
6-7, to Palomar’s Ornellos. Moriyama and Thao Ho lost in doubles, as
they were defeated by Allan Hancock’s Carly Barnett and Clairol
Lozano, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
OCC in contention
* SWIMMING: Sara Natalazio won the 100-yard individual medley in 1
minute, 1.65 seconds to highlight the first day of action for the
Orange Coast College women’s swim team in the Orange Empire
Conference Championships at Palomar Thursday.
OCC, the defending conference champion, is in second place 15
points behind first-place Riverside (178). The Coast men are in third
place, two points behind Palomar and 99 points behind first-place
Golden West (240). The OCC men and women finished second in the 200
freestyle and 400 medley relays.
