Giants edge out Pelicans

The Newport Harbor Pelicans scored four runs in the top of the ninth

inning, but came up just short against the Corona del Mar Giants,

9-8, in a Pony (13-14-year-olds) baseball game at Eastbluff Park

March 27.

Jackson Massingill went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs

while Westley Parks and Nick Svendsen each had two hits in three

at-bats for Newport.

Marshall Stamper scored two runs while Peter Kinney, Travis

Sorenson, Wes LeClay and Ned Lyon each added an RBI for Newport.

In other Pony action:

* Newport 5, CdM Mets 4:

Svendsen went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Newport, which tallied

a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth inning.

Svendsen was also sharp on the mound, striking out six while

scattering six hits and three runs in six innings to earn the win.

Brett Adams went 1 for 3 with two RBIs while Massingill threw out

two runners trying to steal.

Kyle Lawrence struck out on in the seventh to record the save.

In Newport Harbor Baseball Association Pinto American

(7-year-olds) action from April 3:

* Brett Beaudette hit a two-run home run while Matt Valeriano also

slammed a home run for the White Sox in their game April 3.

Owen Muller added two hits while Trey Crossley provided strong

fielding.

* Liam Ogburn slammed three of the Orioles’ seven home runs while

Joey Faris and Jake Parks each had two.

Cobi Blackburn singled to left field.

In Newport Beach Little League Majors Division play:

* Cardinals 7, Dodgers 2:

Stephen McAfee and Josh Starnes each had a pair of hits to lead

the Cardinals to the win.

The Cardinals broke the game open in the fifth inning as Riley

Conroy, Billy McDonald and Michael Bloom all singled and scored on

Cory Vitalo’s double to right.

Bloom and Vitalo each pitched three innings and held the Dodgers

to two hits.

The Dodgers scored first as Nick Couchot walked, stole second and

scored on Chase Carlile’s single.

The Cardinals answered in the second inning as Clark Cashion

singled and eventually scored on Nick Treadaway’s single to left to

tie the game, 1-1.

The Cards scored again in the fourth as Andrew Dunlap, McAfee and

Cashion all singled and Starnes knocked in two with a single for a

3-1 lead. Andrew Machoskie, Tony McCoy and Ben Capaldi led the Dodger

attack both offensively and defensively.

Machoskie threw a strike from left field to the catcher to nail a

Cardinal runner trying to score from third.
