Robert Irving Hench
Robert Irving Hench, of Laguna Beach, died April 12 at his home.
He was 75.
Mr. Hench entered the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program at
Clemson and North Georgia colleges after graduating from high school
in 1945. After another year at Hofstra University at Hempstead, N.Y.
and service with the Army Corps. of Engineers. He graduated from
Syracuse University School of Architecture with a degree in fine arts
in architecture.
Mr. Hench met his wife, Ann, during college where they married.
The couple moved to Beverly Hills and then Newport Beach to work at
an architectural office that later became the Blurock Partnership.
The couple designed and built their home in Laguna Beach where they
have lived for 42 years.
Mr. Hench retired in 1996 and the couple found time to travel.
Mr. Hench is survived by his wife, Ann Darling; children Brian
Dana Hench, Barry Alan Hench and Sandra Darling Hench; and four
grandchildren, Marina, Dana, Kyle and Joel Hench.Services will be
held at noon, April 17 at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific
View Drive, Newport Beach.
Patricia Sturges
Patricia Sturges died April 3. She was 79.
Mrs. Sturges was born in India to a member of the British
military. In India during WWII she met and married Alfred Eugene
(Stu) Sturges, a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Air Force.
The family was stationed at March Air Force Base beginning in 1965
and Laguna beach became a favorite destination. They moved to Laguna
Niguel until Stu’s death. In 1975 Mrs. Sturges moved to Laguna Beach
frequenting Divers’ Cove.
She was a member of Village Laguna, LANO, Laguna Greenbelt, Inc.,
the Laguna Canyon Conservancy, the Woman’s Club and the League of
Women Voters. She was a member of the committee that wrote the
campaign finance ordinance for Laguna and participated in the Village
Entrance study and the Treasure Island study. In 2001 she was honored
as a “Laguna Treasure” by the Laguna Canyon Conservancy.
Mrs. Sturges is survived by daughters Jennifer Gish of Denver,
Elizabeth Wendy Sturges of Dana Point, Susan Lesley Roberts of San
Clemente, Carolyn Petersen of Durango, Colo. and JoAnn Sturges of
Laguna Niguel; four grandchildren; sisters Elizabeth, Susan and
Jennifer, all in England.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 429 Cypress in Laguna Beach.
