Mayor announces small art winners
Mayor Cheryl Kinsman announced the winners of the 2004 “Art That’s
Small at City Hall” competition to a packed crowd April 1.
Jorg Dubin, of Laguna Beach, won first place; Amanda Gress, of
Laguna Beach, won second place; Tamara Thorton, of Laguna Beach, won
third place and the City Hall choice -- voted by city employees.
The competition drew 76 entries from Orange County and was
facilitated by Arts commissioners Mike Tauber, Terry Smith and Mary
Ferguson.
The judges were Marsh Scott, Sawdust Art Festival, John Crosby,
Laguna Plein Air Assn. and Jonathan Burke, Laguna College of Art and
Design.
The exhibit will run through the month from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday through Friday and until 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 505
Forest Ave.
Film documents animal rehabilitation
Orange County Film company Rio Films has documented how the
Pacific Marine Mammal Center, formerly known as Friends of the Sea
Lion, rescues, rehabilitates, and releases sick and injured seals and
sea lions.
Filmmakers went up-close and personal into the sea lions’ world
and got an unprecedented glimpse into their lives. The film allows
viewers to get a view of the researchers and scientists who are
determined to learn more about the lives of marine mammals.
The film will premiere at noon on April 17 in the Newport Beach
Film Festival at the Lido Theater. For information, go to

H.M. Jacks book signing Thursday
Local author H.M. Jacks is having a prerelease book signing of
“Not All Wanders are Lost” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 15 at the
Chakra Shack.
The book has received good reviews from papers such as the San
Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times and the Oregonian. The Chakra

Join in and ‘Rock It for the Rocket’
To help raise money for a new rocket ship at Bluebird Park, Tivoli
Too! will host a live concert by the Laguna Beach-based band the
Blues Offenders from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 18.
There will be a silent auction, raffle, kids’ activities and an
outdoor barbecue. Admission is $35 for adults, prepaid, $40 at the
door, and $15 for kids. The price includes barbecue.

Lagunatics is set to hold auditions
Singers, dancers and comics are needed for “PG-55 Lagunatics --
Beauty Fades. Funny is Forever.”
Auditions are from 1 to 3 p.m. April 20 and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. April 21 at the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. No experience is
necessary.
Organizers encourage newcomers to “strut your stuff, make a joyful
noise and join the fun” by auditioning for “Lagunatics,” Laguna
Beach’s hit musical roast that will be appearing at Leisure World.
The show will use skits and parody lyrics set to musical hits to poke
fun at all the quirks that make Leisure World different.
Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled between May 2 and June 20
with performances June 25, 26 and 27. For information, call (949)

Chamber Music Festival this month
The second Laguna Beach Chamber Music Festival will be April 18 to
April 25.
The festival is a weeklong blend of performances and educational
events, culminating in weekend concerts. Call or go online for

Museum’s spring benefit set for May 6
Laguna Art Museum’s Spring benefit, “Around the World ... A Taste
of Travel and Cuisine,” is May 6 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. under the
stars at the Festival of Arts grounds at 650 Laguna Canyon Road.
Proceeds support the museum’s exhibition and education programs.
The evening will feature sophisticated cuisine by prestigious
chefs, entertainment and a live and silent auction of international
travel and epicurean delights.
Auction items include deluxe hotel stays in Greece, Ireland,
Canada, Mexico, New York City, San Francisco and Park City, Utah, a
membership in the Balboa Bay Club.
Also highlighted is an opportunity drawing for a stay at the
renowned Four Seasons George V in Paris, including round-trip airfare
for two on Air France. Tickets for the opportunity drawing are
limited to 100 and are available for $100.
