Huntington continues Sunset League streak

Huntington continued its hot start in the Sunset League baseball race
by rallying to beat host Marina, 4-3.
The Oilers overcame a 3-0 deficit through three innings of play by
scoring once in the fourth, twice in the sixth and the game-winning
run in the top of the seventh.
Jordan Hargrave remained perfect on the year with his third
pitching win and Colin Balester got the save.
Hargrave, Balester and starter Justin Keadle scattered five hits.
Brandon Parillo hit a solo home run in the third inning as Marina
built a 3-0 lead.
Huntington followed that win with a tense, 1-0 decision over
visiting Edison to improve to 5-0.
Hargrave delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the
seventh and Balester went the distance to record his third win of the
season.
Marina bounced back to down visiting Los Alamitos, 8-5, as Justin
Sellers picked up a pair of hits and two RBIs.
In a wild rivalry game that saw the two teams combine for 21 hits,
Edison outlasted visiting Fountain Valley, 9-8.
Among Edison’s 10 hits was a three-run home run by Cort Ross in
the first inning, a three-run homer by Nate Mitani in the second
inning and a two-run homer by Andrew Mozeleski in the fourth, as
Edison overcame an 8-7 deficit.
In Golden West League baseball, Ocean View suffered a 5-3 home
loss to Orange.
The Seahawks earned a split for the week by dumping host
Westminster, 7-2.
Jeff Roth got the pitching win in a complete-game and doubled at
the plate.
Josh Roth and Derek Walsh each had two RBIs and Joe Jameson, Matt
Hughes and Alex Burnett each had on RBI.
In softball, Ocean View assumed first-place in the Golden West
League standings following a 5-4 victory over visiting Orange.
The Seahawks claimed the win when Jessica Cruz scored on an error
in the bottom of the sixth inning, which broke a 4-4 tie.
Cruz also had two RBIs.
Leah Needham, the third of three pitchers used by Ocean View,
recorded the win by throwing two innings of scoreless ball.
The Seahawks, however, suffered their first league loss in a 5-0
shutout at Westminster.
Nicole Shultz tripled for Ocean View.
In boys’ volleyball, Huntington Beach fell to Fountain Valley,
12-25, 15-25, 16-25, in the Sunset League opener for both schools.
Trey Valbuena led the Oilers with seven kills and Rory Jones and
Steven Kikawa each had six.
Huntington came back, though, to dispose of host Esperanza, 25-23,
25-14, 25-13.
Brandon McLaughlin’s 13 kills paced the Oilers.
In track and field, Edison’s Joe Gatel ran a 9:13.85 to win the 3,200 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational.
In swimming, Huntington’s Bryce Elser bettered his county-leading
time in the 100-yard butterfly by swimming to a 51.96 during the
Oilers’ 101-63 nonleague win over visiting Mater Dei.
Elser also won the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of
1:45.36.
