INSIDE CITY HALL
LONG-TERM
BUDGET STRATEGIES
The council considered adding new revenue sources and
discontinuing or modifying programs.
WHAT HAPPENED
Because of the late hour, City Manager Allan Roeder suggested
continuing the discussion to Monday, April 12. This is traditionally
when the council holds its study session. But because of the
significance of these two items, the council will treat this like a
council meeting and take action.
WHAT WAS SAID
“The sky is not falling -- we’re just trying to tighten our belt
and look for long-term strategies” said Mayor Gary Monahan.
VETERAN’S MEMORIAL
Members of the City Council considered whether to support a
veteran’s memorial, as proposed by resident Bud Hohl, the president
of the city’s chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Hohl asked the
council to help pay for a sculpture to honor veterans who are buried
abroad, which would be placed at Harbor Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
Hohl has plans for the proposed monument and also bought a bronze
eagle to be the focus. The estimated cost for construction of the
memorial is $131,392, according to a staff report.
WHAT HAPPENED
The council directed the Costa Mesa Community Foundation to
recommend how much the city should contribute to the project.
The foundation is collecting donations for the project.
WHAT WAS SAID
“This is an excellent idea,” said resident Beth Refakes. “I hope
members of the community will step forward and contribute. I also
think it will be a welcome addition to our community because it shows
support of veterans.”
