Newport to host Orange County Marathon

Newport Beach will be the starting point for the inaugural Orange

County Marathon Dec. 5. That and more information about the event

will be unveiled today in a press conference at Santa Ana High, said

Corona del Mar High track and field coach Bill Sumner, who will be

the race director.

The route for the marathon will begin at Fashion Island, carry

over to Irvine, along a path toward the Spectrum, then back to the

heart of Irvine and finally to the end: the Newport Dunes.

Sumner said he hopes to land 7,000 to 10,000 runners for the O.C.

Marathon.

“It’s in the first year, but sometime down the line we would like

it to compete with the L.A. Marathon,” Sumner said. “It’s going to be

a real big deal for the community.”

Summer said the marathon will be open to all ages and the event

will include half-marathon and 5,000-meter run/walk competitions.

The event has 10 charities involved and all will be benefiting

ROCK, which stands for Run for Orange County Kids.

The presenting sponsor of the marathon will be PacifiCare.

Pirates sail smoothly

* TENNIS: Both doubles teams earned 8-0 victories and the Orange

Coast College men’s tennis team shut out host Whittier, 7-0, in a

nonconference match Tuesday.

The duo of Mike Hoevel and Scott Fielder, along with the tandem of

Richard Nguyen and Dan Truong, each prevailed over their opponents

while Issac Bailey defeated Dennis LeMoore, 6-2, 6-0, in singles for

the Pirates (3-10, 2-7 in the Orange Empire Conference).

The Pirates conclude their conference schedule at Irvine Valley at

2 p.m. Thursday.

‘Eaters best Bulldogs

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team scored five runs in the

first inning and cruised to a 5-1 nonconference victory over visiting

Fresno State Tuesday.

Justin Cassel struck out five while allowing five hits in five

scoreless innings to earn his second win, getting support from

relievers Michael Koehler, David Huff and Jimmy Alstot.

The Anteaters (20-6-1), ranked 10th nationally, have won seven of

eight as they prepare to open Big West Conference play when they host

UC Santa Barbara Thursday.

Second baseman Matt Fisher went 2 for 4 with one run while Kyle

Ryckebosch tallied two RBIs with one hit for UCI.

Ball, Glatch gear up

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High junior Carsten Ball will meet Dan

Nguyen from Phoenix, Ariz., for a berth in the quarterfinals in the

boys 18s singles draw at 2:30 p.m. today at the Easter Bowl national

tennis championships at the Rivera Resort in Palm Springs. Ball is

the seventh seed.

Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch, the 10th seed, faces eighth-seeded Andrea Remynse from Battle Creek, Mich., in the round

of 16 in girls 18s singles at 11 a.m. today.

Costa Mesa resident Nelly Radeva and Newport Beach’s Kaes Van’t

Hof each came up short in their bids to reach the quarterfinals of

the girls 14 singles and boys 18s singles draws, respectively,

Tuesday.

Fountain Valley’s Brooke Bartlett, the No. 17 seed, earned a 6-4,

6-3 victory over the third-seeded Radeva, who claimed the girls 12s

singles title in last June’s Southern California Tennis Association

junior sectional championships. Van’t Hof, seeded 15th, lost to Nolan

Polley from Lexington, Ky., 6-1, 7-6.

Sage shuts out Bolsa

* SOFTBALL: Senior Katrina Redelsheimer tossed a complete game

two-hit shutout to lead the host Sage Hill School softball team to a

7-0 nonleague win over Bolsa Grande at Newport Ridge Park Tuesday

Redelsheimer struck out four and walked seven. She was one of

three Lightning to tally two hits along with Rebecca Hembarsky and

Alexa Shitanishi. Debbie Yoder-Lee, Redelsheimer and Shitanishi each

scored two runs for Sage Hill (5-7-1), which has two weeks off before

returning to action.

Mesa falls in three

* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team dropped a

25-18, 25-15, 25-11 nonleague road match to Trabuco Hills Tuesday.

Ryan Bagwell had seven kills and 16 digs for the Mustangs, who

fell to 5-6.

Pirates lose close one

* BASEBALL: Palomar College’s baseball team scored four runs in

the final two innings to edge Orange Coast, 4-3, to open the Palomar

tournament Tuesday.

The Pirates (8-16) took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth

before the Comets scored three runs. OCC answered with one in the top

of the ninth, but Palomar scored the game-winning run with one out in

their half of the inning.

Casey McDonald went 2 for 4 with one RBI while Anthony Duarte had

two hits in four at-bats to go with one RBI and one run scored for

OCC, which faces Glendale at 10 a.m. today to conclude the

tournament.

Lions split doubleheader

* SOFTBALL: Freshman Jennifer Rynda tossed a three-hit shutout to

lead the host Vanguard University softball team to a 1-0 upset win

over Cal Baptist in the second game of a Golden State Athletic

Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

Rynda struck out two and walked none in seven innings for the

Lions (26-20, 10-9 in the GSAC), who scored the game’s only run in

the first inning. Ashley Mauro doubled in Rachel Bomgren, who doubled

to begin the inning.
