Pirates capture Cal Cup trophy
The Orange Coast College crew won the Cal Cup varsity eight race
Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay.
The Pirates led from start to finish over the 2,000-meter course,
in a seven-boat field that qualified from three heats of six boats
each contested Saturday.
OCC’s winning time of 6 minutes, 25.4 seconds, was nearly four
seconds faster than runner-up Minnesota, a virtual blowout by the
sport’s standards.
The victorious Orange Coast College boat included Brian Moran,
J.T. Eger, Steve Egner, Wes Temple, Jake Carr, Roman Rukosuyeb, Tyler
Wilcox, Danny Johnson and coxswain Ashley Thomas.
UC Irvine was fourth in the varsity eight event, finishing in
6:36.45.
Orange Coast finished fifth in the junior varsity eight final
(6:45.5) and the Pirates were sixth in the collegiate lightweight
eight event (6:56.6).
In the novice eight consolation final, Orange Coast was eged by
victorious cal by two-hundredths of a second. OCC’s runner-up time
was 6:21.52. UCI was third in 6:30.
The Pirates will venture to the Bay Area in two weeks to compete
in a three-way meet against Stanford and Cal. Orange Coast Coach
Larry Moore said the Pirates will also accept an invitation to
compete in the East Coast Athletic Conference invitational
championships, among 18 top nonscholarship programs, May 8-9 in
Worchester, Mass.
CdM’ Ball advances
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High junior Carsten Ball, the No. 7 seed,
defeated unseeded Sandeep Daiya from Acworth, Ga., 6-4, 6-3, Sunday
to advance to the third round of the Easter Bowl national junior
tennis championships at Riviera Resort in Palm Springs.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
CdM’s St. Geme shines
* TRACK AND FIELD: Corona del Mar High sophomore Anne St. Geme won
the 800 meters and the 1,600, the latter with a meet-record time of 4
minutes, 59.24 seconds, Saturday at the Trabuco Hills track and field
invitational in Mission Viejo.
St. Geme’s winning time in the 800 was 2:14.67.
Sophomore Kelly Morgan was fourth in the 400 in 58.19, while CdM
freshman Hilary May was fourth in the 1,600 in 5:05.95.
The Sea Kings were third in the girls 1,600 relay (4:02.36), while
Costa Mesa finished fifth in the girls 4 x 1,600 relay in 22:44.95.
Local named All-CIF
* SOCCER: Newport Coast resident Kelly Percival, a senior
attending Thacher School in Ojai, has been named second-team All-CIF
Southern Section Division VI by the division’s coaches.
Percival helped the Toads earn an at-large playoff berth, where
they lost in the first round to eventual semifinalist Desert
Christian, 4-1.
UCI handles Vandals
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team trounced visiting Idaho,
6-1, Sunday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The Anteaters (9-6) won all three doubles matches to take the
doubles point, then conquered the Vandals in five of the six singles
contests.
Brian Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, defeated Chis
Faulman, 6-0, 6-2, for the most dominant singles win, while Jon
Endrikat, Ryusuke Kashiwabara and Peter Surapol also won in straight
sets for the hosts.
‘Eaters tame Tigers
* WATER POLO: A quick start propelled the UC Irvine women’s water
polo team to a 9-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Sunday
at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
The Anteaters (8-13, 2-6 in the MPSF) seized a 4-1 lead after one period and held on, behind three goals from Erica Nicholson and two
apiece from Michelle Carey and Robyn Kaake. Melissa Fernandez and
Aleah Amr also scored for the winners, who received six saves from
Sun Chamblee.
Pacific (3-19, 0-8) did not have a player with more than one goal.
Lions’ Hall victorious
* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University senior Sarah Hall broke
Nikki Poole’s 8-year-old school 1,500-meter record Saturday with a
winning time of 4 minutes, 37.43 seconds in a five-way track and
field meet at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego.
Hall bettered her previous best of 4:39.25, as well as Pool’s 1996
standard of 4:38.88 and also easily bested the qualifying standard
for the outdoor nationals (4:44.75).
Vanguard’s Matt Meyer won the men’s 1,500 in a season-best 3:59.5,
besting teammate Mike Larsson, who was second in 4:01.
Lions standout Tony Magana, an Estancia High product, won the
men’s 3,000 steeplechase in 10:02, while another former Estancia
star, Liz Huipe, was second in the women’s 3,000 in a personal-best
10:42.13.
Levi Seekens’ personal-best clearance of 6 feet in the high jump
was good enough for second place, while Debby Chop was second in the
long jump for the Lions with a season-best 17-0.
Laine Stevens was third in the 100 (a personal-best 12.74) and
fourth in the 200 (a personal-best 26.70).
Vanguard’s Christol McDonald finished third in the 800 in 2:17.07,
just .02 off the automatic qualifying standard for the outdoor
nationals. Hall was fourth in the 800 in a personal-best 2:18.12.
