Rollover during rain leaves none injured
An SUV rolled over on the interchange between the Costa Mesa and
San Diego freeways Thursday during about an hour-long downpour that
blasted through the area, but no one was seriously injured.
Two other cars had minor damage resulting from the 5:40 p.m.
rollover, and the already slow traffic was halted for about an hour.
“It was a typical rain accident,” California Highway Patrol
officer Stacy Willits said. “In that hour that it poured, people were
crashing all over the freeways, but fortunately nobody got injured.”
The fire department also responded to the scene because of a gas
leak, Willits said.
“It really wasn’t as dynamic as it sounded or looked to drivers,”
Willits said. “None of the parties involved had to be taken to the
hospital.”
The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook in
the area at 6:06 p.m. Thursday, about 30 minutes after the lightning
and thunderstorm hit Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
