Tilsen sparks CdM

Ben Tilsen shot a 1-under-par 34 to lead the host Corona del Mar High
boys golf team to a 198-200 upset victory over nonleague foe
Esperanza Wednesday at Newport Beach Country Club.
Tilsen’s round featured four birdies in windy conditions, CdM
Coach Mike Starkweather said.
Rob Ury shot 39 followed by a 40 from Jamie Bloom and a 42 by Zach
Rabinovich. Alex Chikovani carded a 43 for CdM (5-9). Esperanza fell
to 10-3.
Newport nearly upsets
* The Newport Harbor High boys golf team came within three strokes
of stunning Woodbridge, which won the Sea View League match, 195-198,
at Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.
Junior Brandon Sowers collected medalist honors, shooting one-over
on the par 36 course.
Senior Michael Benvenuti carded a 39, while juniors Rhett Palmer
and Davis Pemstein each shot 40 for the Sailors (6-6, 2-3 in league).
David Motschenbacher, a senior, came in with a 42.
Woodbridge improved to 11-1, 3-0.
Sage whittles Oxford
* The Sage Hill School trio of Rob Greenfield, Geoffrey Grant and
Josh Chen each shot 42 to help lead the Lightning’s boys golf team to
a 218-261 Academy League victory over Oxford Academy on a par-36
course at Strawberry Farms Golf Club Wednesday.
Alex Cochran and John Neff both carded a 46 for the Lightning
(5-5, 4-2 in league).
