The Laguna Strikers, a girls’ Under-12 soccer team, claimed a
second-place medal at the AYSO Section 11 Tournament.
The Strikers, who won their division title in Area 11-L tournament
play, won three games to finish first in Pool B en route to the
tournament final.
In the final, they fell to Pool A winner, Lynwood, 5-0.
Laguna opened pool play with a 1-0 victory over Costa Mesa.
Mary Bunn scored the lone goal of the match and the defense of
Alex Rieckhoff, Sabina Seyster and Mariah Lumley, and Lexy Ross and
Beverly Ronses in goal, kept Costa Mesa off the scoreboard.
In their second outing, the Strikers downed the North San Diego
Blues, 4-1.
Christina Gardilcic netted all four Laguna goals off assists from
Bunn, Ross, Ronses and Alex DeGarmo.
DeGarmo, Camille Borges, Stormy Dvorak, Anastasia Koorajian, Jade
Copenhaver and Ally Baker anchored the Strikers’ midfield.
In its final Pool B contest, Laguna shutout La Mesa of San Diego
County, 1-0.
The Strikers, coached by Dave Lumley and assistants Mike Borges
and Chris Gardilcic, have been invited to compete as a wild-card
entry at the Tri-Section, a four-team tournament, later this month.
