Costa Mesa High junior Nilani Duarte earned first-team All-CIF
Southern Section Division III honors for the second straight year in
girls soccer, leading a Newport-Mesa quartet that also received
All-CIF recognition.
Duarte played the midfield for Costa Mesa, helping lead Coach Dan
Johnston’s Mustangs (16-6) to an appearance in the second round of
the CIF Division III playoffs.
Costa Mesa junior Jasmin Day (Division III) and Sage Hill School
junior Laura Gordon (Division VI), garnered second-team All-CIF
laurels. Corona del Mar senior Kinzie Kramer was a third-team All-CIF
performer in Division II.
Day, the Golden West League individual champion in cross country,
scored 16 goals for the Mustangs, who won their second straight
Golden West League title. Day was selected to the All-CIF second team
last year, when Costa Mesa won a share of the CIF title.
Gordon, who played goalie for the Lightning’s girls squad,
contributed on defense, as Sage Hill collected its first CIF playoff
berth in its four-year history.
Kramer, the Sea Kings’ senior team captain, played sweeper for
Corona del Mar, which finished third in the Pacific Coast League with
a 6-3-1 record, 9-9-2 overall. The Sea Kings lost, 2-1, in overtime
to El Dorado in the first round of the CIF Division II playoffs.
