Mesa girls topple Ocean View

The Costa Mesa High girls track and field team won 10 events and
bounced back from its season-opening loss with a 96-31 Golden West
League victory over visiting Ocean View Thursday.
The Costa Mesa boys lost, 65-58, yet Marco Huipe doubled (1,600
meters and 3,200) and Qualic Vargas won the discus (132 feet, 9
inches).
On the girls side, sophomore Jasmin Day tripled, winning the 800
(2:30.3), 3,200 (13.13) and high jump (5-2). Cassey Brick (100),
Rachel Hughes (200), Stacy Krikorian (400), Danielle Morton (long
jump) and Thida Pov (shot put) also recorded victories.
Clayton leads Sailors
* Senior Elizabeth Clayton doubled and contributed to a winning
400-meter relay for the Newport Harbor High girls track and field
team, which competed against host Huntington Beach in a non-scoring
meet that also included boys events Thursday.
Clayton won the triple jump (34 feet, 5 1/2) and 110 hurdles
(16.7), while Megan Randall also won two events, the 200 (27.8) and
400 (1:03.1).
Danica Kalmbach (800 in 2:32.1), Whitney Blue (1,600, 5:32.5) and
Lauren Cohen (300 hurdles, 50.8) recorded their first varsity
victories. Lauren Paul (3,200, 11:46.3), Jennifer Ryder (high jump,
4-10), Jackie Belida (long jump, 14-11 1/2) and Ciara Lawrence (shot
put, 29-5) also had first-place marks.
On the boys side, the Sailors won both relays and also earned
victories in the 100 (Keith Eldridge, 11.0), 200 (Joel Walker, 22.9),
3,200 (Miller, 10:24.9) and 110 high hurdles (Thibault Palomares,
18.6).
Estancia girls win
* The Estancia High boys and girls track and field teams reversed
roles from last week, as the girls won and the boys lost in a Golden
West League meet at Westminster Thursday.
The Estancia girls defeated Westminster, 72-55. Freshman Jaye
Hellmich led the Estancia girls (1-1 in league) by winning three
events, the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Elise Carroll (200
meters and 400) and Jeannette Abrego (1,600, 3,200) doubled, Rachel
McMasters won the 300 hurdles (53.3) and the Eagles won both relays.
The Estancia boys dropped to 1-1, losing to the Lions, 69-57.
Jason Johnston (110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles, long
jump) tripled and C.J. Buchmann (800, 1,600) won two events.
