Estancia volleyball team not in the sharing mood

The Estancia High boys volleyball team, which shared the Golden West
League title with Ocean View last year, swept the host Seahawks,
25-17, 25-14, 25-23, Wednesday.
Senior middle blocker Scott Sankey led the Eagles (4-0, 2-0 in
league) with nine kills, while fellow middle blocker, sophomore
Dallas Kopp, added eight kills in Ocean View’s league opener.
Senior Josh Kornegay contributed eight aces and junior setter
Trevor Holmes amassed 30 assists to go with four aces for Estancia,
ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III.
Estancia returns to action in the Orange County championships
Friday. The Eagles play in Division II, which includes 16 teams.
They will face Northwood and Servite Friday, starting at 3 p.m. at
Newport Harbor.
Mustangs win in five
* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team rallied for
a 25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 27-25, 15-2 Golden West League-opening victory
over visiting Saddleback Wednesday.
Ryan Bagwell recorded 22 kills and six aces to lead the Mustangs
(4-2), who also received contributions from Garrett Walthers (14
kills), Mitch Mandel (11 kills) and Andrew Melcer (41 assists).
“We were down 18-9 in the fourth game and I just had a
premonition: I needed to relax and shut up and let them decide the
outcome. And from that point on we just dominated,” Mesa Coach Dave
Sorrells said. Saddleback dropped to 0-4.
Sea Kings sweep Vaqs
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team earned
a 25-18, 27-25, 25-17 nonleague victory over visiting Irvine
Wednesday.
Tom Welch had 11 kills and 10 digs, Austin Brawner had eight kills
and Grant Almquist added 31 assists and six digs for the winners
(6-2).
CdM defeats Chargers
* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team had little
trouble with nonleague visitor Edison Wednesday, earning a 17-1 win.
Sea King doubles partners Ryan Caughren and Jonathan Kroopf won
all 18 games to highlight the win, which increased CdM’s record to
6-0.

Chen paces Lightning
* GOLF: Sage Hill School sophomore Josh Chen shot 2-over-par 38 to
earn medalist honors and lead the Lightning to a 214-237 Academy
League boys golf victory over Whitney Wednesday at Rancho San Joaquin
Golf Club in Irvine.
Geoffrey Grant (39), Rob Greenfield (43), Will Rigby (46) and John
Neff (48) also scored for the winners (3-4, 2-0 in league).
OCC wins again
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team made
quick work of visiting San Diego Mesa, winning, 30-19, 30-16, 30-25,
in an Orange Empire Conference match Wednesday.
Uriah Seui and Setiam Allah led the Pirates (10-1, 2-0 in
conference) with nine kills each. Shawn Pacquing contributed 21
assists. San Diego Mesa fell to 0-9, 0-3.
Bucs roll over Rustlers
* GOLF: Shaun Vickers shot 1-over-par 72 to earn medalist honors
and propel Orange Coast College to a 385-425 Orange Empire Conference
men’s golf victory over Golden West Wednesday at El Prado golf course
in Chino.
Jason Cassidy (73), Peter Baker (75), Josh Dean (79) and Joo
Namkoong (86) also scored for OCC (8-4, 7-3 in conference).
Three Tars recognized
* SOCCER: Newport Harbor High senior Barbara Julian tops three
Sailors named All-Sea View League by the circuit’s girls soccer
coaches.
Julian is a first-team honoree, while senior goalie Kara DeMille
and junior Tayler Giacomaro are second-team selections.
Giacomaro was a first-team all-league honoree as a sophomore.
The Sailors failed to make the CIF Southern Section playoffs this
season.
Six Sage girls honored
* SOCCER: Sage Hill School juniors Amy Werblin and Laura Gordon,
both repeat first-team All-Academy League girls soccer selections,
top six Lightning players named all-league by the circuit’s coaches.
Werblin and Gordon are joined on the first team by freshman Emily
Webb.
Senior Megan Curry, who was second-team all-league as a junior, is
joined on the second team by Sage Hill teammates Ali McLaughlin, a
freshman, and Rebecca Gordon, a junior.
Amy Ray, who guided the Lightning to an 8-7-3 record (4-4-2 in
league good for third place) is the league Coach of the Year.
Sage Hill lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section
Division VI playoffs, 2-1, to Fairmont Prep.
Sailors lose in five
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team had an
11-8 lead in the fifth game, but lost to nonleague host Huntington
Beach, 27-25, 25-18, 21-25, 26-28, 12-15, Wednesday.
Brett Perrine led the Sailors (3-4) with 27 kills, while Morgan
Govaars and Gavin Galey contributed 15 and 12 kills, respectively.
Ted Slater added four kills and six blocks, while Adam Schlesinger
amassed 56 assists.
Newport will play in the Orange County championships, Friday at
4:15 against Edison at Edison and then the Sailors will face Dana
Hills at 6:45 p.m.
Sea Kings denied
* GOLF: Robert Ury shot 2-over-par 35, which included an eagle on
the eighth hole, but the Corona del Mar High boys golf team lost,
183-196, to Cypress in a nonleague match at Candlewood Country Club
Wednesday.
The Sea Kings dropped to 0-7. Alex Chikovani and Matt Story both
had 38, while Jamie Bloom carded a 39. Ben Tilsen (44) and Zach
Rabinovich (50) also competed.
Sea King Coach Mike Starkweather said Ury sunk his eagle from
about 110 yards out.
UCLA outlasts UCI
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team could not
maintain its early momentum and lost, 30-27, 27-30, 23-30, 28-30, to
UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Pauley Pavilion
Wednesday.
Jimmy Pelzel led the Anteaters (8-15, 4-12 in the MPSF) with 17
kills, while Matt Webber added 15 kills and David Smith 12. Brett
Reid totaled 55 assists.
J.T. Wenger had 18 kills to lead the Bruins (18-4, 12-4).
Lions hot, but lose
* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team collected 14
hits and scored nine runs, but still lost, 16-9, to nonconference
host UC Davis Wednesday.
Vanguard first baseman Jason Searle smacked two home runs, and
went 3 for 5 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Adam Yoder also had
three hits for the Lions (7-17-1).
