Breakers notch first win in baseball

The Laguna Beach High baseball team notched its first victory of the
season Tuesday and in doing so gave Tom Faris his first win as head
coach.
At Saddleback High, the Breakers defeated the host Roadrunners,
7-4, in pool play at the Newport Elks Tournament.
Senior Aaron Pickett threw six strong innings for Laguna to secure
the win.
Conley Sampson pitched the seventh inning to record the save.
Offensively, lead-off hitter Jeff Bolar reached base safely in
each of his four at-bats. The junior singled twice, doubled and
walked.
He scored twice and also drove in a run.
Sampson and Grant Harrell each collected a pair of RBI to pace
Laguna.
Alex Wilson and Kevin Kelly each also had an RBI.
Kelly, who played catcher, threw out two Roadrunners attempting to
steal second base.
Laguna began the Newport Elks Tournament and its season with a
13-1 loss to visiting Santa Ana Valley.
The Breakers sent three pitchers to the mound against the Falcons.
Bolar had Laguna’s lone RBI.
A day later, Laguna traveled to Santa Ana High and dropped a 4-3
game to the host Saints.
Sampson earned the honor of hitting the first home run of the
season for Laguna when he sent a towering shot to right field.
Harrell had a big day at the plate with a single, double and
triple.
He also had one RBI, and Sampson finished with two RBI.
Harrell threw the first 5 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Wilson
in the sixth and Sampson pitched the seventh.
In girls’ softball, Laguna recorded its first win of the season in
routing Capistrano Valley Christian, 12-3.
The Breakers took advantage of 10 errors by the Eagles.
Lauren Delgado got the pitching win.
In boys’ tennis, Laguna fell to visiting Whitney, 13-5, and at
Dana Hills, 18-0.
The Breakers’ No. 1 doubles team of Kyle Paxson and Jeremy
McKiernan won by scores of 6-4, 6-1, but lost a tiebreaker in their
third game, 7-6.
Laguna previously had defeated St. Margaret’s, 13-5.
The Breakers got a clean-sweep in doubles play from No. 1 Eric
Tran/Kyle Paxson, No. 2 Chris Gourdal/Jon Wagner and No. 3 Jaime
Contreras/Seth Bernard.
Dieter Schmitz, and No. 1 singles, and No. 3 Michael Cordini, each
won two of three.
In boys’ volleyball, Laguna fell to 1-1 after a 21-25, 19-25,
17-25 loss to visiting Huntington Beach.
