UCI to host pollution awareness lecture
Devra Davis, author of “When Smoke Ran Like Water: Tales of
Environmental Deception and the Battle Against Pollution,” will speak
March 30 at UC Irvine about the environmental links to breast cancer
and other diseases.
Davis’ book was a National Book Award finalist. She also is a
visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School in
Pittsburgh and an expert advisor to the World Health Organization.
A Clinton appointee, Davis served from 1994 to 1999 on the
Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, an independent
executive branch agency that investigates, prevents and mitigates
chemical accidents.
As the former senior advisor to the assistant secretary for health
in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counseled
leading officials in the United States, the United Nations, the World
Health Organization and the World Bank.
The event will take place at 7 p.m. at the Beckman Center of the
National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, at 100 Academy Drive,
Irvine.

Seminar offered for first-time home buyers
A free seminar for first-time home buyers will be offered at 6:30
p.m. March 24 in Newport Beach.
Sponsored by Financial Partners Credit Union, the seminar will
cover what to look for in a home, the benefits to buying, cost
considerations, loan pre-approval and the closing process.
Snacks and door prizes will also be offered. The seminar will be

Top senior care provider promoted
Newport Beach’s Vintage Senior Housing LLC appointed Cathy Ellis
executive director of the Avalon at Newport East and Avalon at
Newport West communities.
The facilities, which are across from Hoag Memorial Hospital,
offer independent and assisted living for seniors as well as dementia
care and other programs.
Ellis has worked in the senior housing and long-term care industry
for nearly 25 years, most recently operating a senior living
consulting service in San Juan Capistrano. She has twice been ranked
the top provider of customer service for a national assisted living
firm and is a California certified residential care administrator.
