Eagles win in four

The Estancia High boys volleyball team did its best to live up to its
No. 1 ranking in CIF Southern Section Division III with a 25-22,
20-25, 25-19, 25-21 season-opening victory over visiting Los
Alamitos, ranked No. 9 in Division I.
Josh Kornegay led the Eagles with 15 kills, while Kris Hartwell
added 12 kills and Brad Larsen produced 16 digs and six kills. Scott
Sankey also had six kills, and Trevor Holmes amassed 37 assists.
“That was a good team for us to beat,” Estancia Coach Tracey Heims
said. “[The Eagles] pulled through and they handled the pressure.”
Estancia will host Servite Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
CdM edges Brentwood
* TENNIS: Junior Spencer Reitz defeated Brentwood High’s No. 1
singles player, Dan Freeman, 6-4, in the last match of a grueling
10-8 nonleague victory in the season opener for the visiting Corona
del Mar boys tennis team Tuesday.
Reitz and Wesley Miller swept in singles for CdM, the defending
CIF Southern Section Division I champion, which got two key victories
from doubles partners Brennan Roberts and Ryan Coughren.
Partners Alex Nguyen and Nick Gingold, along with Jonathan Kroopf
and Dan Tat, each won one doubles set for CdM, which played without
junior Carsten Ball, who is recovering from food poisoning, Coach Tim
Mang said.

Mustangs win opener
* VOLLEYBALL: Grant Walthers and Ryan Bagwell collected 11 and 10
kills, respectively, to lead the Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team
to a 25-16, 17-25, 25-22, 25-17 nonleague victory over visiting Los
Amigos in the Mustangs’ season opener Wednesday.
Andrew Nelcer contributed 20 assists. Coach Dave Sorrells said
sophomore middle blocker Ryan French made some impressive plays.
The Mustangs return to action Friday at Calvary Chapel of Santa
Ana at 4:30 p.m.
Estancia wins opener
* GOLF: Marcus Sostak shot a four-over-par 40 to earn medalist
honors to lead the host Estancia High boys golf team to a narrow
228-229 nonleague victory over Long Beach Millikan to open the season
at the par-36 Mesa Verde Country Club Tuesday.
Austin Serr shot 45 while Greg Les and Nick Littieri each carded
47s. Jason Les shot 49 for the Eagles.
Lions trip Westmont
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team remained
perfect with an 8-1 Golden State Athletic Conference triumph at
Westmont Monday in Santa Barbara.
The victory, a makeup of a match previously rained out, improved
the No. 17-ranked Lions to 7-0.
Dieter Weislmaier, Anders Hakansson, Lars Dahlberg, Carl Holmgren,
Phillip Mardh and Thomas Troxler all earned singles victories for
Vanguard.
Hakansson and Dahlberg, as well as Weislmaier and Christoph
Schramm also combined for doubles wins for the Lions.
Vanguard sweeps Hope
* TENNIS: Olga Hlushchanka, Silina Yohner, Sara Bradley and Alena
Votavova didn’t lose a game in sweeping all their singles matches to
lead the visiting Vanguard University women’s tennis team to a 9-0
victory over Hope International Tuesday. The Lions improve to 8-0,
(4-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference).
Estancia opens with win
* SWIMMING: Chad Kunert, Paul Collier and Anthony Hermann each won
two events to lead the host Estancia High boys swim team to a 78-48
nonleague victory over Bolsa Grande Tuesday to begin the season.
Kunert took the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races in 2:03.09 and
5:25.29, respectively, while Hermann claimed the 200 individual
medley (2:43.11) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.03). Collier won the
100 free (57:02) and the 50 free (25:12). Sean Goodman won the 100
butterfly (1:06.28).
Trojans shut out UCI
* BASEBALL: USC starter Josh Rummonds and two relievers combined
on a five-hit shutout Tuesday night as the Trojans defeated host UC
Irvine, 2-0, in nonconference baseball action.
Rummonds, 1-1, allowed four hits in six innings, then Bret Butler
and Ian Kennedy kept the shutout intact. The Anteaters (9-3-1) lost
for the first time in nine games. UCI leadoff hitter Brett Dalton had
two hits. USC improved to 4-7.
OCC downs Santa Ana
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team dropped
just one match in singles and defeated host Santa Ana, 5-1, in an
Orange Empire Conference match that had its doubles portion rained
out Wednesday.
Sabrina Tanamal, Darlena Tran, Kai Moriyama cruised to victory in
singles, while Thao Ho and Jia-Wei Yuh received wins by default.

* TENNIS: Gerald Panichkul claimed the lone victory for the Orange
Coast College men’s tennis team in a rain-shortened Orange Empire
Conference match against visiting Irvine Valley Tuesday.
Panichkul swept his singles match for OCC (1-5, 1-2 in the OEC).
Mike Hoevel and Scott Fielder were leading their doubles match, 7-5,
but the match was called early due to rain, OCC Coach Mike Mayne
said. The Pirates host Saddleback at 2 p.m. Thursday.

VU falls at Point Loma
* BASEBALL: Host Point Loma defeated Vanguard, 10-2, in Golden
State Athletic Conference baseball action Tuesday.
VU starting pitcher Brent Erickson held the Sea Lions (15-3, 5-1
in the GSAC) scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings after giving
up five earned runs in the first three innings. Vanguard fell to 4-9,
0-5. The Lions host Indiana Wesleyan on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Sage’s Chen sparkles
* GOLF: Sage Hill School sophomore Josh Chen shared medalist
honors Monday, but the Lightning dropped their boys golf season
opener to visiting Irvine, 230-233, at Strawberry Farms Golf Club.
Chen shot 5-over-par 40 to share top individual honors with
Irvine’s Jon Chen (no relation).
