Anteaters sweep away Gonzaga

UC Irvine senior second baseman Matt Fisher belted a grand slam to
highlight the Anteaters’ 9-2 nonconference baseball win over Gonzaga
Sunday at Anteater Ballpark.
The Anteaters (9-2-1) swept the three-game series and extended
their unbeaten streak to eight games. They are off to their best
start since 1971 when they began the season 10-2.
UCI opened the scoring with four runs in the second. Shortstop
Chad Lundahl tripled and catcher Jeff Werhun doubled to cap the
rally.
Fisher’s team-leading second homer of the season keyed a five-run
fourth.
Werhun was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Lundahl was 2 for 4 with
an RBI and a run.
Starter Chris Nicoll earned his first win of the season, allowing
no earned runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
David Huff and Kevin Fox then combined for three scoreless relief
innings.
Gonzaga fell to 2-8
UCI plays host to USC Tuesday at 6 p.m. UCI Coach John Savage was
the pitching coach at USC from 1996-2000.

Pirates collect five titles
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team claimed
five titles to dominate the Southwestern Tournament, completed Sunday
at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.
Sophomore Sabrina Tanamal won the No. 1 singles tournament, while
fellow OCC sophomore Kai Moriyama (No. 4 singles) and Pirates’
freshman Mika Okamura (No. 6 singles) were also victorious in
championship matches. Okamura defeated OCC freshman Jia-Wei Yuh, 6-1,
4-6, 6-3, in the Flight 6 final.
In addition, sophomore Leah Becker and Tanamal (Flight No. 1), as
well as freshman Darlena Tran and Yuh (Flight No. 3) won doubles
titles.
