Hotel offers

job shadowing

College students from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa and Cal

State Dominguez Hills in Carson visited the Hyatt Regency in

Huntington Beach Feb. 11 to learn more about career opportunities in

the hotel business.

The visit was part of the National Groundhog Job Shadow Day

program, which is sponsored in part by the federal government. The

goal of the program is to give students across the country a chance

to observe professionals go through a day at work.

Students visiting the Hyatt separated into small groups for

behind-the-scenes looks at various aspects of the hotel’s operations.

Students observed hotel management throughout the hotel, including at

the front desk, in the spa and in the kitchen.

Checking out the front desk was Joseph Boyer, a graduate of

Huntington Beach High School. Boyer said he has been interested in

the hotel business since high school because such a career involves a

good deal of interaction with other people.

“Why not have a career that deals with the social aspect of

life?,” he asked.

The Hyatt’s general manager, Cormoc O’Modhrain, said he hoped the

visit would give the students a solid understanding of the hotel

industry.

“I really want them to see the opportunity for what it is, a

sophisticated and professional business,” he said.
