Strikers earn finalist medal in tourney play
The H.B. Strikers, a boys AYSO Under-10 Gold All-Star team from
Region 56 South Huntington Beach, completed Area 11K tournament play
with two decisive wins.
The victories gained the squad finalist medals for the tournament.
“Our boys played some incredible soccer,” coach Mike Weaver said.
“They should really be proud of their accomplishments. They moved the
ball well and executed our plays. I am sure they will continue to
develop their skills and be a force to reckon with for many years to
come.”
The first victory was 2-0 over North Huntington Beach. Dillon
Brown got the assist by crossed the ball from the left side to a
well-positioned Sloan Varing, who found the net. Later in the game,
Sloan again scored on a towering direct kick to the far post over the
goalie’s reach.
The second game was a 3-0 decision over Fountain Valley. Madison
Hayden scored first on a breakaway goal, getting an assist from
Brown. Blake Mooney also scored on a breakaway of his own.
Both shutouts were the result of strong midfield play by Scotty
Weaver and Brent Bazzell and defense of Joey De Marco and Conner
Johnston. Keepers Michael McClemmonds-Nguyen and Taylor Biedlman
recorded the two shutouts.
The Strikers also consist of Brendon Hartjoy and Kevin Johnson and
coach Ron Varing.
