Schmidt leads Vanguard to win

The Vanguard University women’s basketball team improved to 23-2,
15-4 in Golden State Athletic Conference play with a 73-53 victory at
Point Loma Nazarene Tuesday.
Kelly Schmidt led the Lions with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Lisa Faulkner added 14 points, nine assists and five rebounds, Lacey
Burns had 12 points and Rachel Besse came off the bench to score 10
points as the Lions shot 50% from the field.
Point Loma Nazarene (18-10, 12-4),which shot just 35.4%, was led
by Kristen Jenkins’ 16 points and nine rebounds.

Loma shoots down VU
* BASKETBALL: Point Loma Nazarene shot better than 55% in the
first half, including five of six on three-pointers, to open a
20-point halftime lead and cruise to an 89-66 home victory over
Vanguard University in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s
basketball game Tuesday.
Point Loma (11-14, 6-8) finished the game 10 of 20 from beyond the
arc, led by a 7 of 12 performance from Nick Nicholson, who scored 21
points.
Vanguard didn’t even make 10 field goals in the first half, when
it scored just 21 points. Horace Wormely had 13 points and Brian Kim
added 12 to lead the Lions (11-15, 4-11). Leon Rosborough added 13
points and 11 rebounds.

UCI beats Fresno State
* BASEBALL: Erik Johnson delivered a three-run home run in the
fourth inning Tuesday night to spark the UC Irvine baseball team to a
5-3 win over host Fresno State (3-5).
Steve Schroer picked up the win in relief for the Anteaters (3-2),
while Blair Erickson recorded his second save before 2,215 fans. Kyle
Ryckebosch hit a solo home run for UCI.
Choi, Won lead ‘Eaters
* GOLF: UC Irvine finished seventh in the 14-team field at the Bay
Area Classic at The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge Tuesday.
The Anteaters shot a 341 Tuesday to finish in seventh place with a
two day total 672. Ninth-ranked Washington won the event with a
36-hole total of 629 (312-317). San Jose State’s Ashley Gomes was the
individual medalist shooting a tournament-low 72 Tuesday to end the
event with a score of 152.
UCI sophomore Angela Won and freshman Minnie Choi tied for third
place at 155. Choi shared the individual lead going into the final
round with a career-low 75 on the first day. Won shot 77 Monday and
78 on Tuesday. It is the best career finish for Choi and ties Won’s
career best, which was set last season.
Sophomore Reanna Yun jumped to 63rd after shooting an 86 Tuesday
for a score of 180. Junior Shelly Raworth was 66th with an 185
(88-97), while senior Karlie Ward is 69th with a 191 (91.-101).
UCI returns to action traveling to the Spartan Invitational Mar.
