Cal tops UCI in series finale
Visiting Cal broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning and never looked
back, defeating UC Irvine, 10-4, in a nonconference baseball game
Sunday before 986 at Anteater Ballpark.
The win allowed the Golden Bears (5-4) to avert a sweep in the
three-game series, evening UCI’s record at 2-2.
Designated hitter R.J. Brown and right fielder Danny McCarthy
paced UCI’s six-hit attack with two hits apiece.
UCI starter David Huff lasted three innings, giving up three runs
on six hits. Reliever Justin Cassel fell to 0-1, allowing two runs on
five hits in 3 2/3 innings, while striking out four.
Cal starter Adam Gold gave up just one earned run and six hits
while striking out five in five innings, but left the game tied at
four.
Alex Trafton. Trafton earned the win with three shutout innings.
UC Irvine visits Fresno State Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.

Turpin wins two events
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine senior Annmarie Turpin won two events
in a four-way indoor track and field meet at the Walkup Skydome in
Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday.
Turpin won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.78 seconds and the high jump
at 5 feet, 8 inches.
Freshman Orlisha Henlon placed second in the high jump at 5-6.
Freshman Kirsten Loftin finished second in the pole vault (11-9
3/44) while the Anteaters went 2-3-4 in the triple jump with freshman
Adonica Shaw (37-3 1/4), junior Amber Nefas (36-2) and freshman
Ashlee Marshell (35-8 1/2).
In the long jump, freshman Kat Dawkins was third (17-11 1/4),
Marshell was fourth (17-9 3/4), and junior Kim Harper fifth (17-9
1/4). The Anteaters’ 1,600 relay of Dawkins, Nefas, Lauren Adams and
Suzanne Purmort was second (3:55.27).
UCI lost to Northern Arizona 92-48, to Southern Utah 96-44 and to
New Mexico 74.5-62.5 in the dual-meet scoring. The Anteaters’ next
competition is the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor
Championships in Seattle Feb. 27-28.
UCI wins in double OT
* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team earned a 5-4
road win in double overtime Sunday over Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation rival Hawaii at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Aleah Amr scored with 22 seconds left in the second overtime to
give UCI the victory, helping the Anteaters improve to 5-4, 1-1 in
the MPSF.
Hawaii fell to 4-4, 1-2.
Erica Horman scored twice for UCI, which also received single
goals from Rebecca Wedemeyer and Michelle Carey. Sunceray Chamblee
had six saves for the winners.
49ers dispatch ‘Eaters
* TENNIS: Tiffany Chang and Anna Bentzer earned singles victories
to provide the only highlights for visiting UC Irvine, which dropped
a 5-2 women’s tennis decision to Long Beach State Sunday.
UCI fell to 2-3, while Long Beach State is now 2-3.
Chang defeated Nicole Bouffler, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Bentzer beatLindsey
Marvel, 6-3, 6-0.
