UCI goes extra innings to beat Cal again
It took 12 innings, but the UC Irvine baseball team claimed its
second straight victory over Cal, 4-3, in nonconference action
Saturday night.
The Anteaters scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to
tie Cal, 3-3, and pushed the final run across with two outs and the
bases loaded in the 12th.
Steve Schroer pitched two scoreless innings, striking out five, to
notch his first win of the year. Matt Fisher went 1 for 5 with a
double and knocked in two runs for the ‘Eaters (2-1).

‘Eaters hold off UCR
* BASKETBALL: Christina Callaway scored a team-high 18 points and
grabbed 14 rebounds as the UC Irvine women’s basketball team battled
through 12 lead changes to finally defeat visiting UC Riverside,
56-55, in a Big West Conference game Saturday.
Lauren Yadon added 17 points while Ashley Biggins came off the
bench to score 12 points for the Anteaters (5-16, 4-9 in conference),
who went 0 of 11 from three-point range.

Sailors improve to 23-3
* WATER POLO: The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team held
nonleague host Coronado to one goal through three goals en route to a
9-6, regular-season ending win Saturday.
Junior Ashling Taylor led the Sailors (23-3) with three goals,
while seniors Jessica Ball and Carolyn Conway, along with junior Anne
Belden contributed two goals each. Ball recorded seven steals for
Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I, and
Belden and Taylor had two steals apiece. Senior Sarah Mutt provided
two assists.
Senior goalies Kim Housepian and Terin Cottam stopped three shots
each.
The Sailors’ junior varsity also defeated Coronado, 8-0. Kally
Lucas and Amanda Barto scored three goals each. Lucas produced eight
steals and Leah Robertson had five. Goalie Kendal Nelson had seven
saves to go with her shutout.
CdM defeats Montebello
* WATER POLO: Vivian Liao, Katya Eadington and Camille Hewko
scored two goals each, leading the Corona del Mar High girls water
polo team to a 7-3 nonleague victory over visiting Montebello to
close out the regular season Saturday.
Eadington scored both of her goals in the first quarter as CdM
(18-9), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II, took a 2-1
lead. Corona del Mar junior goalie Brittany Fullen anchored the
defense with nine saves. Ashley Chandler contributed three steals,
while Liao had two. Hewko also provided two assists.
VU blows out Bethany
* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team swept visiting
Bethany in a nonconference doubleheader, scoring 28 runs with two
shutouts in a total of 12 innings because of mercy rules Saturday.
Vanguard first baseman Scott Martin went 2 for 3 with four RBIs
and Jason Searle went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, leading the Lions to a
16-0 defeat in seven innings. The Lions (4-2) had 12 hits, including
David Hudgins’ 2-for-2 performance that came with two runs scored and
two RBIs.
Hudgins delivered a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored, while
Mike Sparks (2 for 2 with two runs scored) and Andrew Freeman
contributed three RBIs each in Vanguard’s 12-0 win over Bethany in
five innings. Nikolas Crouch and Brandon Cox added two RBIs each.
Hudgins had the game’s lone triple.
UCI downs NAU
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team nearly shut out Northern
Arizona, but defeated the Lumberjacks 6-1 in a nonconference match at
Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The Anteaters (2-3), ranked No. 75, won the doubles point, winning
all three doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles, junior Brian Morton, a
Corona del Mar High product, and junior Ryusuke Kashiwabara defeated
Thibault Schram and Lew DeLeon 8-1. Senior Jon Endrikat and senior
Wkwesi Williams cruised past Jamie Maxwell and Jonas Jegers 8-1 in
No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Kashiwabara was edged by the Lumberjacks’ Jeremy Coll,
7-5, 7-5. But the Anteaters won the rest.
Endrikat defeated Thibault Schram, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 slot.
Brian Morton defeated Jonas Jegers, 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Zoran
Korac, a former Orange Coast College standout, earned the ‘Eaters’
closest margin of victory, defeating Jamie Maxwell, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in
the No. 4 slot. Senior Renouk Wijemanne took out Lew DeLeon, 6-0, 6-3
in the No. 5 match. In No. 6 singles, Mustafa Ulukan defeated Ronson
Taylor, 6-2, 6-2.
UCI sweeps Tritons
* VOLLEYBALL: Jimmy Pelzel and Spencer Bemus slammed 19 and 13
kills, respectively, leading the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team to a
three-game, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over visiting
UC San Diego Saturday.
The Anteaters (6-8, 3-6 in the MPSF) won, 30-25, 30-26, 31-29, to
snap their three-match skid.
Brett Reid contributed 46 assists, six digs and eight block
assists, while David Smith added seven block assists.
Paulson two behind
* GOLF: Dennis Paulson (Costa Mesa High) shot a 5-under-par 67
Saturday on the South course at Torrey Pines in La Jolla and trails
John Daly by two strokes for the lead after 54 holes of the PGA
Tour’s Buick Invitational.
Paulson, who lives 10 miles away from Torrey Pines, carded
consecutive 69s in the first two rounds and sits in third
(11-under-par 205) heading into today’s final round.
Trio hot for Lions
* BASKETBALL: Kevin Dalafu, Brian Kim and Horace Wormely combined
for 80 points, leading the Vanguard University men’s basketball team
to a 90-81 victory over The Master’s in a Golden State Athletic
Conference game at the Pit Saturday.
Kevin Dalafu, a reserve, scored a career-high 30 points, including
27 in the final 20 minutes, while Kim also had 30 and Wormely
contributed 20 points and eight assists for the Lions (11-14, 4-10 in
conference). The Mustangs dropped to 15-9, 6-7.
