Cirque seeking high-flying help

Cirque du Soleil is looking to pluck talented performers from

obscurity in Orange County.

Cirque representatives will hold a talent contest Feb. 21 in

Fashion Island’s Bloomingdale’s Courtyard from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A

panel of four judges will watch the contestants. Participants could

be jugglers, magicians, strong men, contortionists or comedians.

Selected participants will win ticket prizes as well as have a

videotape of their performance presented to the group’s casting

department. Those interested in participating must register by 5 p.m.

Luncheon to host talk on Prop. 13’s effects

Gary Burton, former chief financial officer of Orange County, will

speak at the monthly lunch meeting of the League of Women Voters of

Orange Coast on Friday.

Burton will speak on the topic “Local Government Finance in a Post

Proposition 13 World.” The meeting will begin at noon and is open to

league members as well as the public. It will be held at Marie

Callender’s Restaurant at 15363 Culver Drive in Irvine.

Fairview Park friends to tour vernal pools

The city of Costa Mesa’s Fairview Park Friends Committee is

inviting the community to take a special tour of the vernal pool

areas of the park on Feb. 21 starting at 9:30 a.m.

These pools are said to be the sole habitat for the San Diego

Fairy Shrimp, an endangered species. Vernal pools are also a seasonal

source of food and water for migratory birds, other animals and

insects.

The 90-minute tour will begin in the westerly parking lot.

Sanitary district celebrating anniversary

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District is celebrating its 60th

anniversary this year.

On Feb. 8, 1944, voters approved forming the district to install a

sewer system and to collect trash and garbage. Today, the district’s

population is about 115,000, and it’s still headed by a five-member

board of elected officials.

Circus to put on six extra March shows

Cirque du Soleil has added six additional performances of

“Varekai” from March 4 through March 7 at the Orange County

Fairgrounds.

Tickets cost from $60 to $80 for adults and $42 to $56 for

children.
