Six wrestlers advance to CIF

Five wrestlers from Estancia High and one from Costa Mesa qualified

for the CIF Southern Section Individual divisionals following the

Golden West League finals at Santa Ana High Thursday.

Estancia’s Gabriel Thaler finished second at 140 pounds while Anthony Herman took second at 160. Other Eagles to qualify for CIF

include Alex Sotomoyer (third at 171), Juni Panduro (third at 130)

and Martin Diaz (third at 125).

Costa Mesa’s Joe Amburgey (189) placed third.

Landon Pulizzi (215) and Raul Cruz (275) finished fourth and are

alternates.

Westminster High will host the CIF individuals Feb. 20-21.

Eagles end with win

* WATER POLO: Estancia High girls water polo coach Bob Bandaruk

said his team played its best game of the season and defeated

visiting Sage Hill, 13-4, in a nonleague contest to close out the

season Thursday.

Senior Marilyn Reich scored four goals to lead the Eagles (11-8),

while Carolina Barnes and Courtney Hess added three goals each.

Lauren Mahan contributed two goals and Britta Pitti had one. Senior

Hayden Hutchison led the Lightning (7-14) with three goals.

Vanguard wins at home

* BASKETBALL: Lacey Mills scored 24 points to lead Vanguard

University to an 83-77 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over

visiting Westmont.

Rachel Besse added a career-high 21 points off the bench and 10

rebounds, recording her third double-double of the season. Point

guard Lisa Faulkner contributed nine points and 15 assists as

Vanguard improved to 21-2 and 13-2 in conference, remaining in first

place.

Bucs edge Cuyamaca

* TENNIS: Kai Moriyama and Thao Vo earned key singles victories to

help lead the Orange Coast College women’s tennis team to a 5-4

nonconference win over visiting Cuyamaca Thursday.

Moriyama and Vo both won, 6-3, 7-5, in their respective matches.

Jia-Wei Yuh and Mika Okamura also won in singles, while the OCC

doubles teams of Leah Becker and Sabrina Tanamal, and Moriyama and

Yuh contributed with wins as well. The Pirates improved to 2-1.

Cuyamaca dropped to 1-2.

Sage Hill victorious

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School boys soccer team closed out its

regular season with a 1-0 Academy League victory over host Oxford

Academy Thursday.

Sophomore Zack Milder scored on an assist from senior Julian

Smith-Newman in the 31st minute. Senior goalie Cesar Arriaga stuffed

seven shots for Sage Hill. Oxford dropped to 8-6-3, 5-4-1. The

Lightning (11-6, 9-1 in league), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section

Division VI, will most likely share the Academy League title with St.

Margaret’s (8-1 in league), which faces Whitney today. Sage Hill

posted nine shutouts in league play.

Bucs hold off IVC

* BASKETBALL: Alisa Carrillo scored a game-high 21 points and

grabbed 10 rebounds while Amy Shaw added 16 as the Orange Coast

College women’s basketball team held on to defeat host Irvine Valley,

67-65, Thursday night in an Orange Empire Conference game.

Biava Arganda added 14 as OCC made 9 of 19 three-pointers (47.4%).

OCC (13-13, 6-6 in the OEC) outrebounded IVC, 41-9.

Pirates win on road

* BASKETBALL: Jason Garey scored 14 points, going 4 of 6 from

three-point range, to lead the visiting Orange Coast College men’s

basketball team to a 70-61 Orange Empire Conference win over Irvine

Valley Thursday night.

Matt Hatch added 12 points and eight rebounds while Aaron Bobik

scored 10 for the Bucs (6-18, 3-9 in the OEC).

Aztecs top Anteaters

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team held visiting

San Diego State scoreless in the second half, but the Aztecs still

won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener, 4-2, Thursday.

Melissa Fernandez and Michelle Carey scored one goal each for the

No. 14 Anteaters (4-4). Senior goalkeeper Sunceray Chamblee recorded

nine saves for UCI.

Pierce shuts out Coast

* TENNIS: Freshman Mike Hoevel took his opponent to three sets to

highlight the Orange Coast College men’s tennis team’s 9-0

nonconference loss to host Los Angeles Pierce Thursday.

Hoevel claimed the first set against Derek Starleaf, 6-4, but

dropped the final two sets.

Scott Fielder lost to Jason Wek, 6-4, 6-4, in singles while Mike

Manus and Colin Duncan stretched Pierce’s No. 1 duo of Craig Galva

and Illan Aristarhov before losing, 8-5.

Coast fell to 0-3 while Pierce improved to 3-0. The Pirates open

Orange Empire Conference play Feb 24 when they host Riverside.

VU women shut out

* TENNIS: The Vanguard University women’s tennis team swept in

singles and doubles play en route to a 9-0 Golden State Athletic

Conference victory over host The Master’s College Thursday.

The Lions (2-0, 1-0 in conference) dropped just five games in the

match. Olga Hlushchanka and Silina Yohner both won, 6-0, 6-0, while

Amy Brown, Alena Votavova and Amanda Poynter lost just one game each

in singles.

Titans hold off ‘Eaters

* BASKETBALL: The visiting Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball

team went the last four minutes, 49 seconds without a field goal, but

still managed to defeat UC Irvine, 59-50, in a Big West Conference

game Thursday.

Christina Callaway led the Anteaters (4-16, 3-9 in conference)

with 19 points and six rebounds while Lauren Yadon came off the bench

to scored 12 points while grabbing four rebounds.

The ‘Eaters were just 1 of 6 from beyond the arc (16.7%) as the

Titans (5-14, 6-5) scored 27 points off 17 UCI turnovers.

Coast shut down

* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team allowed seven

runs in the first inning and never rebounded, losing, 14-4, to East

Los Angeles at the Southwestern tournament Thursday.

The Pirates (3-2), the designated home team, came within, 7-4, but

were shut down the rest of the way, while East L.A. scored three runs

in each of the sixth and eighth innings, and one in the final frame.

OCC will close out tourney play today at 2 p.m. when it faces host

Southwestern.

Lavery shoots 78

* GOLF: Former UC Irvine golfer Mike Lavery, who won the Monday

qualifier to play in the PGA Tour’s Buick Invitational at Torrey

Pines in La Jolla, shot a 6-over 78 on Thursday in the first round

and is in jeopardy of missing the cut.

UC Irvine duo honored

* SWIMMING AND DIVING: Sophomores Anton Slobounov and Franny

Brittle have been named Big West Conference Athletes of the Week for

their performances against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Slobounov won the one-meter and three-meter diving events in the

dual meet against Cal Poly, setting school meet records in both. He

scored a 326.33 in the one-meter and 316.13 in the three-meter. Both

scores were good enough to qualify him for the NCAA regional diving

championships.

Brittle won the one-meter and three-meter diving events against

Cal Poly with scores of 254.10 and 294.38, respectively. Her score in

the three-meter event not only qualified her for the NCAA regional

diving championships, but broke a 20-year-old UC Irvine record. Both

scored are highest among Big West divers this season.
