Costa Mesa girls upset Westminster

Needing an upset to keep their playoff chances alive, the Costa Mesa

High girls basketball team delivered a 58-52 Golden West League

victory over host Westminster, setting a school-record 14

three-pointers.

Senior Susy Trujillo hit seven of those threes -- a school record

for one player in a game -- and finished with a career-high 25 points

for Mesa (10-13, 4-7 in league), which can still earn the 11 wins

necessary to petition CIF for an at-large playoff berth with a

victory Thursday over visiting Santa Ana.

Eagles crush Panthers

* Estancia girls: The Estancia High girls basketball team closed

out its regular season with a 62-40 Golden West League victory over

visiting Orange Tuesday.

Nancy Castro (18 points and three steals), Crystal Mino (16 points

and six steals) and Trisha Wase (11 points, seven assists and four

steals) led the Eagles (10-15, 7-5), while senior Anabel Becerra

contributed five rebounds and two steals.

Playoff hopes denied

* Sage Hill girls: Sage Hill School’s CIF Southern Section playoff

hopes were crushed as the Lightning lost, 52-44, to Academy League

visitor Whitney Tuesday.

Sage Hill (9-10, 4-5 in league) needed 11 wins for playoff

eligibility.

The Lightning will close out the season today at Oxford Academy.

Tars lose to Warriors

* Newport girls: For the first time in Jen Thompson’s three-year

reign as head coach, Newport Harbor High finished the regular season

with a winning record despite a 61-25 Sea View League setback to host

Woodbridge Tuesday night.

The Sailors (13-12, 4-6 in league) trailed, 12-7, at the end of

the first quarter, but the Warriors (10-0 in league) went on a 49-18

run to close out the game.

Lions avoid upset

* Vanguard women: Lisa Faulkner scored 24 points and tallied 11

assists as the Vanguard University women’s basketball team received a

scare,but hung on to defeat host Fresno Pacific, 84-82, in a Golden

State Athletic Conference game Tuesday night.

Faulkner’s six three pointers led Vanguard (20-2, 12-2 in the

GSAC), but the Sunbirds hit on 15 of 30 from beyond the arc to keep

it close.

Sea Kings shut down

* CdM girls: Corona del Mar High Coach Jim Barkalow said his team

wore down in the second half and Pacific Coast League host Northwood

took advantage on its way to a 51-39 victory over the Sea Kings

Tuesday.

Senior Lauren Snell led the Sea Kings (7-16, 2-8 in league) with

13 points, six rebounds and six steals.

Sarah Stern contributed seven points and three steals. Sophomore

Kelly Kawata came off the bench to add nine points.

Coast falls to sixth

* OCC women: Sophomore Alisa Carrillo’s 36 points and seven

rebounds were not enough as Orange Coast College dropped solely into

sixth place in the eight-team Orange Empire Conference with a 72-63

loss to visiting Saddleback Tuesday.

Sunbirds fly over Lions

* Vanguard men: Brian Kim scored a game-high 26 points, but it was

not enough as the Vanguard University men’s basketball team fell,

74-63, to host Fresno Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference

game Tuesday night.

Horace Wormely tallied 17 points for the Lions (10-14, 3-10 in the

GSAC). Albert Jones scored 23 points while Joe’l Sligh tallied 22 for

the Sunbirds (12-11, 6-7).

Pirates lose by 10

* OCC men: Aaron Bobik came off the bench to score a team-high 18

points, but Orange Coast lost, 65-55, to Orange Empire Conference

visitor Saddleback Tuesday.
