ON THE AGENDA

Here are some of the items the Newport-Mesa Unified School

District board of trustees will be discussing tonight.

STUDENT CONDUCT POLICY REVISION

The board will consider changes to its 4210 Policy, which relates

to general student conduct. The changes would apply to summer school

violations.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This policy relates to suspension, expulsion, involuntary transfer

to continuation school and exclusion. In a series of study sessions,

the board has been reviewing the policy, which defines causes for

student discipline. The revision stipulates that anyone who violates

the rule during summer school will be dropped and not receive credit.

The board is expected to approve the revision.

ADDITIONS TO

COURSE OF STUDY

A life skills class will be added to the high school course of

study. This item was held over from the previous meeting.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Life skills is a home economics core class for freshmen. It would

cover nutrition and health, child development, food preparation and

clothing construction.

Students would work with the Food Guide Pyramid, learn food

preparation, work on communication skills and study child development

and apparel construction

The board is expected to approve the addition of this course.

RULES FOR PARENT INVOLVEMENT

By law, the district is required to have a parent involvement

policy that meets the requirements of the federal No Child Left

Behind act and Title I.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After a team of inspectors from the state visited in November,

they recommended that the district revise its rule and regulation on

parent involvement. In the regulation, parent involvement is

described as ways parents can support their children to get the most

out of their education.

The recommended revision states that the superintendent will

support school staff members to encourage parent involvement in a

variety of ways, including helping them develop parenting skills and

providing supportive home environments.

This is the second reading of the revision, and the board is

expected to approve it.
