When I arrived at the Gift of Life event, it was obvious to me where

the picture was. Patti Lusk was painting a vase in a nice spot where

the light was warm. It worked out even better since my subject was a

cancer survivor looking toward the future.

A little “light of hope,” I thought. A flash can be an intrusive

burst of light so I don’t use one often.

I will always see if I can get away with it before using one. In

this case, there was only one spot of warm light so I used it to

avoid having a darker room, and thus a flash. And as luck would have

it, the right subject was in the right light, giving me the right

shot.

Photo editor Steve McCrank liked this one and convinced me it the

right choice and it looks like it was.
