OCC’s Horton tosses gem against De Anza

Sophomore right-hander Reid Horton struck out six and tossed a

one-hitter over eight innings in his first start to lead the host

Orange Coast College baseball team to a 4-0 victory over De Anza in

the final game of the Matt O’Brien Memorial tournament Saturday.

Horton walked none and faced three batters over the minimum,

allowing a single through the right side by Robbie Hoffman to lead

off the sixth inning.

Ryan Clear worked a scoreless ninth for Coast (2-1), striking out two batters.

Dan Sokarda and Dustin Hicks each went 2 for 4 with a double and

one RBI. Sokarda also scored two runs. Robbie Blauer and Garrett

Young added RBI singles.

Record crowd for UCI

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team limited

visiting Cal State Northridge to 5 of 27 shooting (18.5%) in the

second half en route to a 63-48 Big West Conference victory in front

of a school-record 2,227 spectators Saturday night.

UCI outscored the Matadors, 39-22, in the second half to pull

away, using a 16-0 run to gain a seven-point advantage with 17:22 to

play.

Anteater senior guard Kristen Green scored a game-high 19 points

to go with eight rebounds and six assists, playing all 40 minutes.

Green tied a career high with five three-pointers.

Cal State Northridge (3-16, 2-9 in conference) used a 6-1 run to

close within 51-44, but UCI (4-15, 3-8) made 9 of 12 free throws in

the final 1:23 to close it out.

UCI senior forward Christina Callaway tallied 17 points on 7-of-11

shooting while Shayna Stanley tied a career-high with eight points

while setting a career-high with six rebounds.

Martin’s RBI wins it

* BASEBALL: First-baseman Scott Martin lined a one-out single to

left field to plate Adam Yoder with the game-winning run in the top

of the ninth inning to give the Vanguard University baseball team a

come-from-behind 5-4 nonconference triumph over host Cal State

Dominguez Hills Saturday.

Vanguard (2-2) scored two runs in the top of the ninth after

Dominguez Hills (2-3) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the

eighth.

Right-hander Brent Erickson pitched a scoreless ninth to record

his first save of the year and gave reliever Michael Guernsey, who

tossed two hitless innings, his first win. Vanguard starter Marcus

Harris allowed three runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits while striking

out four in six innings.

Vanguard shortstop Mike Sparks finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

He slammed a two-run home run in the fifth to give Vanguard a 3-1

lead. Martin went 3 for 5 with one run scored while Yoder went 2 for

4 with two runs scored.

CdM advances nine

* WRESTLING: Corona del Mar High junior Andrew Keigian won the

Pacific Coast League wrestling title in the 215-pound division to

lead a pack of nine Sea Kings who advanced to the CIF championships

after their performances led their squad to a third-place finish in

the PCL finals at Tesoro Saturday.

Calvary Chapel won the PCL team title and Tesoro finished second.

Keligian pinned his opponent from Northwood in 5:17 in the final.

Taylor Alston (112-pound division), Matt Loeb (130), Brian Feeley

(135), Jon Dean (140), Issac Inouye (135), Dean Moheimani (152), Ryan

Shores (160) and Robbie Richey (heavyweight) also advanced to the CIF

championships, Feb. 20-21 at Ayala, in their respective weight

classes.

Alston and Dean finished second, while Loeb, Feeley, Inouye,

Moheimani, Shores and Richey earned third-place medals.

Moheimani moved up three weight classes from his usual division

during the season, said Sea King Coach Gary Almquist, who was also

proud that 32 wrestlers combined on all levels completed in the PCL

finals, surpassing his goal of 30.

Freshmen make splash

* TRACK AND FIELD: Freshman Orlisha Henlon finished third in the

high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 5 3/4inches while senior Annmarie

Turpin placed sixth at 5-3 3/4 as the UC Irvine women’s track and

field team opened its season in the Mountain invitational at the

Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday. The meet did not have

team scoring.

Freshman Kat Dawkins placed fourth in the invitational long jump

at 17-9 3/4 and Turpin was sixth with a mark of 17-7 1/2.

Anteater freshman Erricka Williams was fifth in the open long jump

(16-0 1/2) and Adonica Shaw, another freshman, finished sixth at

15-11 3/4.

Turpin finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.90

and junior Amber Nefas placed sixth in the invitational 400 at 58.08.

Junior Suzanne Purmort placed eighth in the 400 (58.89).

In the open 400, freshman Kamaria Heru took third (59.10), while

Dawkins placed fifth (59.50) and senior Lauren Adams finished seventh

(60.29).

UCI returns to Flagstaff Saturday for dual meets against Northern

Arizona and New Mexico.

UCI sweeps Cal Poly

* SWIMMING: The UC Irvine women’s and men’s swimming teams each

defeated visiting squads from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday in

the ‘Eaters’ final home meet of the season. The UCI women won,

129-103, while the men earned a 147-8 victory.

On the women’s side, sophomore Franny Brittle broke a 20-year old

UCI record in three-meter diving with a score of 294.38. She now

qualifies for the NCAA regional diving championships held in Oklahoma

City, Okla., in March. Brittle also won the one-meter competition

(254.10). Freshman Mai Tajima (Newport Harbor High) won both the 200

freestyle (1:55.83) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.45).

On the men’s side, senior Phil Garcia won the 200 free (1:43.62)

and the 100 free (46.97) while sophomore diver Anton Slobounov won

both the one-meter (326.33) and the three-meter (316.13) competitons

for UCI.

UCI will next compete at the Big West Conference championships on

Feb. 18-21 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

‘Eaters split at UC San Diego

* WATER POLO: Robyn Kaake scored four goals and Melissa Fernandez

added two as the UC Irvine women’s water polo team defeated Cal State

Bakersfield, 10-3, after losing to Indiana, 6-5, in the opening round

of the UC San Diego invitational Saturday. Fernandez and Erica Horman

each scored twice for the Anteaters in the first game. UCI (3-2) will

face Hartwick, N.Y., at 8 a.m. today in group play.

UCI’s Garcia honored

* SWIMMING: UC Irvine senior swimmer Phil Garcia has been named

the Big West Conference Athlete of the Week for his performance

against UC San Diego Jan. 31.

Garcia helped the Anteaters to victory against UCSD, winning the

50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.

His times in the 50 (21.04) and 100 (46.08) are the fastest among

UCI swimmers this season. Garcia’s time of 1:42.82 in the 200 free is

also a season best.

Garcia, who earned the same honor Jan. 7, is the first men’s

swimmer to be honored more than once this season.

Dyer Lion of Week

* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University junior softball standout Lindsey

Dyer, who had five hits in a pair of victories Jan. 31 over Patten

University, has been named Lion of the Week by the school.

A utility player who started in right field in both games of the

doubleheader, Dyer went 4 for 4 and scored three runs in the first

game, then drove in the game-ending run in a 9-1 win, called early

due to the mercy rule.

Her five hits came in consecutive at-bats and she finished the

doubleheader 5 for 7 with four runs.

CdM tennis coach sought
