Newport Harbor remains unbeaten in league
Senior Carolyn Conway and junior Anne Belden scored five goals each
to lead the Newport Harbor High girls water polo team to a 14-2 Sea
View League victory over host Laguna Hills Wednesday.
The Sailors (17-2, 4-0 in league) outscored Laguna, 10-1, in the
first half to coast to the win. Leah Robertson provided two goals,
while Melissa Wheeler and Ashling Taylor contributed one each. Kally
Lucas recorded four steals. Jessica Ball and Katie Erickson added
three steals each.
Goalies Terin Cottam and Kim Housepian anchored the defense with
four and two saves, respectively. Newport’s junior varsity team won,
7-1, and the Sailors’ frosh-soph squad earned a 6-1 victory.
CdM too tough for Titans
Corona del Mar High scored seven first-period goals and was well
on its way to a 16-7 Pacific Coast League victory over host Tesoro
Wednesday.
Camille Hewko scored three of her game-high four goals in a first
period that saw CdM build a 7-1 lead.
Katya Eadington scored three goals while Vivian Liao and Katlin
Kubas each tallied two goals. Jordan Anae, Tracy Kubas, Chelsea
Lyman, Katie Lemmerman and Lauren McAdams each scored one goal.
Eadington added three steals.
Brittany Fullen made four saves while Kelsey McCormick stopped two
shots for CdM (12-7, 3-0 in league.
CdM’s junior varsity team scored a 15-0 victory over Tesoro while
the frosh-soph squad earned a 6-1 triumph.
Hutchison leads Sage Hill
Hayden Hutchison scored four goals to lead Sage Hill School to a
7-1 nonleague victory over Kennedy Wednesday at CdM High.
Devin Tooma added two goals and Nathalie Ramirez added one more
for Sage Hill (7-10), which began to execute its offense more
effectively in the third period, resulting in three goals, Coach Jeff
Andrews said.
Kathryn Bishop made eight saves for the Lightning.
Estancia absorbs tough loss
Estancia High closed out its Golden West League season with a 19-4
loss to visiting Orange Wednesday.
Junior Courtney Hess scored two goals, while sophomores Chelsea
Kaplan and Carolina Barnes added one each. Kaplan started as the
Eagles’ goalie and recorded three saves. Sophomore Katie Mahan had
five saves for Estancia (10-8, 2-4 in league).
Orange has a chance to share the league title with Costa Mesa as
the Panthers are 4-1 and Mesa is 5-0 with one league game remaining.
