Inspiration is in the eye of the beholder
We are people who are not inspired? We certainly are not. We just
don’t want the statue here. We don’t see a need for it and certainly
not a statue of that size. A plaque would be fine.
We are now told, according to a Pilot article, that the proponents
are going to withdraw their application. But we understand that they
are thinking of simply moving it in the very same area but maybe not
on what they consider to be Inspiration Point.
The point is, we’re not anxious to have it here at all on our
shoreline because it is an obstruction of view. And if they want to
put it someplace in the city, there are other places that they could
put it -- in a public park or even on Coast Highway at Marguerite
Avenue where the dolphins are in the garden section.
I understand that there will be objections to the use of the
statue at any place on the coastline in Corona del Mar that will be
voiced at the hearings scheduled to be held before the commission and
the council.

Enough with the arts, what about parks?
Hey, Costa Mesa, did you see that article in the Pilot about the
new Bonita Canyon Sports Park? In the past eight years, Newport Beach
has built five new baseball fields, five new soccer fields and two
new softball fields. The Sunset Ridge Park is on the drawing board
and the city is planning on remodeling the athletic fields at
Mariners Park.
At the same time, the city of Costa Mesa is planning to spend
millions of dollars to improve its theater district. I’m sure the
residents of Costa Mesa can’t wait to spend $50 or more on a ticket
to see a ballet or string quartet. Thank you; thank you to Newport
Beach for building what the residents want and giving our children a
chance to catch fly balls and not bullets.

No point in messing with perfection
Regarding the “world-class” idea of putting a large sculpture at
Inspiration Point: Most of the people who took the time to comment
seem to think the view itself is world-class.
It is the entrance to a world-class scenic harbor. There is a
world-class view of a beautiful island and an out-of-this-world view
of each sunset.
People seem to feel there is enough going on there already, with
quite a few trees and little enough room to see the view. Why
embellish what is already more beautiful than any man-made art? Ever
heard of gilding the lily? Please consider another site.

* EDITOR’S NOTE: The Corona del Mar Centennial Planning Committee
has agreed to look for another site for the commemorative sculpture.
Let the voters decide on 1901 Newport Blvd.
I am in favor of the project going to a vote by the citizens of
Costa Mesa. Let the people who live here decide what should be here
and what should not. The City Council is obviously not listening to
the people that have spoken at the meetings, which have been going on
for six months
It is the people who are going to have to live with this after
it’s built and the people who should be the ones that make the
decision -- not the developer, who will be out of here as soon as he
makes his money. He will be gone. The size and density of the project
proposed show that the developer doesn’t care about this community.
