Sea Kings upset University
Senior Adam Freede scored a career-high 22 points, including 12 in
the fourth quarter, as the host Corona del Mar High boys basketball
team upset University, 67-62, in a Pacific Coast League game
Wednesday night to keep their slim hopes alive for a third-place
finish in league
Tyler Lance also scored a career-high 10 points to do with 10
rebounds for CdM (12-12, 3-5 in league). Jay Northridge scored 15
points while Pancho Seaborn added 10 points.
Andrew Nobe’s three-pointer cut the CdM lead to one point with 37
seconds left, but a subsequent layup and some clutch free throws by
Freede sealed the win.
Junior Brett Hirata made his first appearance in a game since
breaking his collarbone in the eighth game of the season.
The Sea Kings have the required 11 wins to petition the CIF for an
at-large berth into the playoffs with two games remaining.
Northwood improved to 5-3 in league with a 58-54 win over Tesoro
Wednesday.
CdM hosts Calvary Chapel at 7 p.m. Friday in its final
regular-season home game.

Sailors get by Vaqueros
* SOCCER: Senior Joel Walker scored his 27th and 28th goals of the
season and the host Newport Harbor High boys soccer team held on to
defeat Irvine, 3-2, in a Sea View League game Wednesday.
Freshman Ruben Trujillo converted a Will Guzman feed for Newport’s
other goal.
Newport took a 3-1 lead in the 55th minute when Walker booted a
penalty kick into the right side of the goal after Skyler Taugher
drew the foul in the box.
Irvine crept within 3-2 with a goal in the 65th minute, but the
Sailors’ defense held off any additional attacks.
Matt Tracy added an assist for Newport (13-5, 6-2 in league),
alone in first place ahead of Foothill (5-1-2 in league). Woodbridge
is 4-2-2 in league with two games remaining.
The Sailors host Laguna Hills at 5 p.m. Friday.
‘Eaters play host to UOP
* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will attempt to
end its three-game losing streak tonight, when it plays host to the
University of the Pacific in a Big West Conference game at 7:05.
UCI (9-9, 4-5 in the Big West) is coming off consecutive road
losses at Long Beach State, Utah State and Idaho. But the Anteaters
have won two straight at home.
UOP (13-7, 8-1), on a four-game winning streak, defeated UCI,
67-52, Jan. 10 in Stockton.
UCI’s 7-foot senior center Adam Parada is averaging a team-leading
13.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
UOP is paced by sophomore forward Christian Maraker (14.1 ppg, 5.6
rpg).
UCI is also home Saturday at 7:35 p.m. against Cal State
Northridge.
Mustangs win again
* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team earned its 22nd
straight Golden West League victory Wednesday with a 4-0 home victory
over Orange.
Junior Nilani Duarte scored two goals and added an assist.
Sophomore Jasmin Day scored for the 11th time this season and junior
Jenny Sparks, in her first game back from a knee injury she suffered
in December added a score.
Kyla Flores and Yareli Ortega also had assists for the Mustangs
(13-5, 10-0 in league), while Kara Jenkins and Sara Bryant were solid
in the defensive effort.
Kindra Bailey finished with three saves for the Mustangs, who face
Estancia Friday.
Ringstrom scores winner
* SOCCER: Senior Chris Ringstrom scored the lone goal as the
Corona del Mar High boys soccer team remained in first place with a
1-0 home victory over University.
Ringstrom found the back of the net in the 69th minute. A quick
outlet pass from goalie Jay Zimmerman found midfielder Julien Cerutti
on the right side of the field. Cerutti played an early ball behind
the defense, which Ringstrom tracked down and chipped over the
goalkeeper with the outside of his right foot.
The Sea Kings (10-3-6, 5-1-2) outshot University 17-4, including
14-1 in the second half. Corona del Mar returns to action Friday at
home against Calvary Chapel.
OCC wins opener
* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore setter Mike Murphy dished out 27 assists
to lead a balanced Orange Coast College attack in a 30-17, 30-25,
30-19 men’s volleyball win over the University of San Diego club team
in the Pirates’ season opener Wednesday.
Sophomore outside hitter Jon Larson led OCC with nine kills and
seven digs, while sophomore Poyer Poia added eight kills and freshman
Uriah Seui added seven kills to go with a match-high five blocks.
Mesa cruises past Orange
* BASKETBALL: Junior Venise Enesi came off the bench to score a
career-high 11 points to help lead the Costa Mesa High girls
basketball team to a 43-29 Golden West League victory over visiting
Orange Wednesday.
Senior Susy Trujillo contributed team-highs in points (15),
rebounds (seven) and steals (four), while senior Cassey Brick scored
six, dished out five steals and recorded three steals.
Trujillo connected on a three-pointer with three minutes left to
give the Mustangs (9-12, 3-6 in league) their biggest lead, 41-25.

Saints silence Eagles
* BASKETBALL: Nancy Castro scored 16 points and added 11 rebounds,
but it was not enough as the Estancia High girls basketball team lost
to host Santa Ana, 52-35, in a Golden West League game Wednesday
night.
The Saints outscored the Eagles, 16-5, in the third quarter after
taking a 22-17 halftime lead. Estancia Coach Tamette Rappa attributed
the run to confusion on defense.
Jazmin Flores added nine points for the Eagles (8-15, 5-5 in
league).
Rappa praised the play of junior varsity call-ups Be Diep (four
rebounds) and Michelle Hallock (four points).
The Eagles face host Costa Mesa at 7 p.m. Friday.

* BASKETBALL: Cypress College went seven minutes, four seconds
without a point in the second half, but still managed to hold off the
visiting Orange Coast women’s basketball team, 59-51, in Orange
Empire Conference action Wednesday.
Alisa Carrillo led the Pirates (11-12, 4-5 in conference) with 18
points and eight rebounds, while Biava Arganda added 12 points. The
Chargers (15-7, 7-1) shot 7 of 25 from the field (28%) in the second
half and finished 38.9% from the field. The Pirates, the defending
state champions, were 38% from the field (19 of 50).
Brittany Imaku scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cypress.
Cypress closes out Coast
* BASKETBALL: Visiting Orange Coast College shot just 19% from the
field (4 of 21) in the second half as Cypress pulled away for a 71-54
Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball victory Wednesday night.
Sophomore Jason Garey led the Bucs (4-18, 1-8 in the OEC) with 15
points followed by 12 from Alex Hunter. Cypress, which led, 39-34, at
halftime, had three players score in double figures, led by Justin
Burns’ 18 points.
