Sea Kings edge toward playoffs
Kelly Morgan scored a pair of goals and Corona del Mar High’s girls
soccer team knocked off Pacific Coast League foe University, 4-1,
Tuesday to leave itself one win shy of a playoff berth.
Morgan opened the scoring in the 30th minute, scoring off a cross
from Rachel Yelsey. Another cross from Yelsey, six minutes later, was
put into the back of the net by Elizabeth Almaraz as the Sea Kings
(8-7-2, 5-2-1 in league) took a 2-1 halftime lead.
Jessica Mazura extended that advantage with a penalty kick in the
61st minute and four minutes later Morgan added her second goal, a
header after a long throw-in from Courtney Carnahan.
Corona del Mar Coach Bryan Middleton praised the play of fullbacks
Kinzie Kramer, Tanisha Senaratne and Vanessa Fallon, who combined to
limit University (4-4 in league) to three shots on goal.
With a win over Calvary Chapel Thursday, the Sea Kings will clinch
a spot in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
Lions down UC Riverside
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team defeated
nonconference host UC Riverside, 6-1, as the Lions won five of six
singles matches and recorded two doubles victories to gain the team
point Tuesday.
The Lions’ Dieter Weislmair, Lars Dahlberg, Christoph Schramm,
Phillip Mardh and Thomas Troxler won in singles, helping Vanguard
(2-0) defeat the NCAA Division I team. Weislmair defeated Norman Tan
in No. 1 singles play, 6-4, 6-2.
Dahlberg and Anders Hakansson, and the tandem of Schramm and
Troxler contributed doubles victories.
Besse sparks Vanguard
* BASKETBALL: Freshman Rachel Besse scored a team-high 16 points
to go with 10 rebounds to lead the Vanguard University women’s
basketball team to a 63-49 Golden State Athletic Conference victory
over visiting Concordia Tuesday.
Lacey Burns tallied 12 points while Lisa Faulkner scored 11 and
added nine rebounds. Freshman Kelly Schmidt tallied eight points to
go with 13 rebounds as Vanguard (18-2, 10-2 in the GSAC) rebounded
from an 85-66 setback to Biola Saturday and claimed revenge for a
nine-point loss to Concordia Dec. 6.
The Eagles (13-9, 6-6), who feature former Orange Coast College
standouts Nancy Hatsushi and Lauren Murray, got to within seven
points twice in the second half, but the first-place Lions ended the
game on a 20-13 run.
Murray scored four points while Hatsushi tallied three points and
three assists.
Vanguard faces host Westmont, second in the GSAC, at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday.
Lim, Marshall victorious
* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High’s wrestling team wrapped up its
Sea View League dual match schedule with a 68-10 loss to host Irvine
Tuesday.
Senior Kid Lim (119 pounds) tallied his 21st victory this season
with a win by major decision, 13-5, against Kevin Shayegi. Freshman
JesseeMarshall pinned Gene Baik in 4:44 for his first varsity win at
152 pounds, giving Newport (4-7, 0-5 in league) its two victories.
Irvine improved to 4-1 in league.
The Tars will compete in league finals at 10 a.m. Saturday at
Laguna Hills High
Concordia tops Lions
* BASKETBALL: Brian Kim and Horace Wormely scored 17 points apiece for Vanguard University, but the Lions were knocked off by No. 2
ranked Concordia in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s
basketball game, 86-63.
Lightning boys stalled
* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School’s boys basketball team made a run
at first-place St. Margaret’s Tuesday, closing to within six points
midway through the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell, 59-45.
Jordan Ogron came off the bench to connect on three three-pointers
in the second half, but the Lightning (9-11, 1-6 in Academy League
play) could never overcome St. Margaret’s 18-9 first-quarter
advantage and the Tartans, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section
Division IV-A, improved to 20-1, 7-0 in league.
Matt Loper led Sage Hill with 17 points and Kevin Joyce added 13.
Sailors go cold in setback
* BASKETBALL: Danyelle Swenson hit 17 of her game-high 23 points
in the second half to lead the visiting Irvine High girls basketball
team to a 49-40 Sea View League victory over Newport Harbor Tuesday.
The Vaqueros (9-11, 4-4 in league) outscored the Tars, 28-19, in
the second half. The Sailors tallied one field goal in the fourth
quarter, a three-pointer by junior Maaike Trobman (five points), with
one minute left. Newport Coach Jen Thompson said her team’s defense
struggled in the second half.
Senior Jillianne Whitfield led Newport (12-11, 3-5) with 11 points
while Vanessa Miller tallied 10. Allyson Stoltz, Whitfield and Kristi
Eddington each grabbed seven rebounds while Miller added six.
Newport senior forward Victoria Swigart sat out the game to rest a
knee that popped out of place in a game Thursday.
Trojans hold off Sea Kings
* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team fought
hard, but couldn’t keep visiting University down long enough as the
Trojans improved to 8-0 in the Pacific Coast League with a 54-49 win
Tuesday night.
Sarah Stern hit a three-pointer in the corner to give the Sea
Kings a 46-45 advantage with one minute, 40 seconds remaining, their
first lead since an 8-7 edge in the first quarter.
But the Trojans (15-7 overall) made 3 of 4 subsequent free throws
and held on for the win. University defeated CdM, 67-21, in the prior
meeting this season.
Senior Lauren Snell tallied 13 points to go with three rebounds
while Stern finished with seven points. Colleen Skalla scored six
points and added six rebounds for the Sea Kings (7-14, 2-6). Skalla also added two steals and played strong defense, CdM Coach James
Barkalow said.
Sage Hill girls fall, 52-46
* BASKETBALL: The Sage High School girls basketball team held a
six-point lead after three quarters, but lost, 52-46, to Academy
League host St. Margaret’s Tuesday.
The Lightning (8-9, 3-4 in league) was outscored, 20-10, in the
fourth quarter, as Coach Shanna Renkin said she had to discipline two
key players, including one starter, for arguing with each other.
She benched them and Renkin said her team suffered down the
stretch.
Sophomore Haywood Wright led Sage Hill with 17 points, 14 rebounds
and six blocks, while sophomore Debbie Yoder-Lee added 11 points,
five steals and four assists.
Yoder-Lee committed just two turnovers, Renkin said.
St. Margaret’s dropped to 11-4, 6-1.
Eagles knocked off, 2-1
* SOCCER: Sophomore Pedro Duarte scored for the Estancia High boys
soccer team, but the Eagles lost, 2-1, to visiting Saddleback, which
scored the game-winner in the closing moments in Golden West League
action Tuesday.
Duarte’s goal tied the score, 1-1, in the first half, but
Saddleback scored with about two minutes left, Estancia assistant
coach Armando Ortiz said.
Eagles Coach Steve Crenshaw was not at the game, as he was
suspended after he was assessed a red card in a game against Ocean
View Jan. 27.
Orange Coast drops opener
* BASEBALL: Orange Coast College lost its season opener and the
opening game of the Matt O’Brien Memorial tournament Tuesday,
falling, 5-2, to Mt. San Jacinto.
Steven Johns allowed just two runs on four hits in six innings,
but the Eagles (1-0) tallied single runs in each of the last three
innings to break a 2-2 tie.
Matt Cline and Jeff Piaskowski each had two hits for the Pirates
(0-1), with Cline providing the Bucs’ only run batted in and
Piaskowski finishing with a double and a triple and a run scored.
OCC returns to tournament play Thursday to take on Chaffey in game
two of the tournament at 2 p.m.
Anteaters 12th in Arizona
* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished 12th with a 54-hole
total of 872 in the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate tournament that
concluded Tuesday at Arizona National Country Club in Sabino Springs,
Ariz., outside of Tucson.
Arizona won the 15-team tournament with a three-round total of
28-under par 824. New Mexico was second at 834, Arizona State third
at 843, USC fourth at 848 and Wake Forest was fifth at 852.
Chris Nallen of Arizona claimed medalist honors with an 18-under
total of 195 (63-64-68). Pepperdine’s Michael Putnam was second at
13-under 200.
UCI senior Vinnie Poncino finished ninth at 5-under 208 (65-71-72)
on the par-71 course.
Ryne Rindfleisch was 42nd at 219 (75-74-70), Will Park placed 57th
at 223 (68-79-76), Neno Boonyaplanun was 67th at 227 (78-71-78) and
Chris Whalen finished 77th at 233 (73-81-79).
UCI returns to action Feb. 23-24 hosting the Anteater Invitational
at Santa Ana Country Club.
