Vanguard men upset Biola
Vanguard University’s men’s basketball team had its five starters
score in double figures as the Lions upset Biola, 80-70, in a Golden
State Athletic Conference game Saturday.
Biola, ranked No. 19 in the NAIA, dropped to 15-5, 6-4 in
conference.
Brian Kim led the Lions (10-11, 3-7) with 18 points, while Leon
Rosborough and Josh Pierson added 14 points each. Horace Wormely and
Tim Burnette contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Eagles opened the game with a 20-8 lead in the first 13
minutes, but the Lions later answered with a 20-7 run to close out
the half and led, 31-30, at halftime.
The Lions shot 51.9% from the field (27 of 52), including 57.1% in
the second half (16 of 28).

VU sweeps doubleheader
* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University opened its softball season with a
pair of victories over visiting Patten in a nonconference
doubleheader Saturday.
The Lions opened the day with a 9-1 victory and ended it with an
8-0 win, that included a five-inning no-hitter by freshman Jennifer
Rynda.
Vanguard collected 12 hits in the first win, as Lindsey Dyer led
the way with a 4-for-4 performance that came with three runs scored.
Catherin Buttrey hammered out a three-run home run in the second
inning.
Holly Martinez, Judy Bell and Beth Burchell earned two RBI each,
leading the Lions to the victory in the nightcap.

Tars dominate Trojans
* WATER POLO: The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team easily
defeated visiting University, 13-2, in a nonleague game Saturday.
Senior Jessica Ball scored four goals to lead the Sailors (16-2).
Melissa Wheeler, Kally Lucas and Leah Robertson added two goals each,
while Katie Erickson, Anne Belden and Jennifer Beech contributed one
apiece.
Ball, Belden and Lucas provided two assists each, and Ball,
Wheeler and Lucas recorded three steals each.
Goalies Terin Cottam (six saves) and Kim Housepian (two) anchored
the defense.
Newport’s junior varsity team also won, 11-1, and the frosh-soph
squad earned a 9-0 victory over the Trojans.

UCI sweeps UCSD
* SWIMMING AND DIVING: UC Irvine swept UC San Diego at the
Anteater Aquatics Complex on Saturday with the Anteater women
winning, 175-125, and men, 180-120.
On the women’s side, freshman Ashley DePaul broke her own school
record by winning the 100-meter butterfly in 56.16.
For the UCI men, senior Phil Garcia won the 200 freestyle
(1:42.82), the 50 free (21.04) and the 100 free (46.08).
The Anteaters will host their final home meet of the season Feb. 7
at 1 p.m. against the Cal Poly Mustangs.
Idaho handles ‘Eaters
* BASKETBALL: Emily Faurholt of the University of Idaho scored 26
points and the visiting Vandals shot 74% from the field in the second
half (17 of 23) as Idaho defeated UC Irvine, 68-49, in a Big West
Conference women’s hoops game Saturday night.
Guard Kristen Green sparked UCI (3-14, 2-7 in the Big West) with
19 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Lauren
Yadon came off the bench to score 11 points and added two steals for
the Anteaters, who trailed at halftime, 23-17.
Idaho, also led by Heather Thoelke’s 14 points, improved to 14-4,
6-3.

Kaake leads UCI women
* WATER POLO: The No. 15 UC Irvine Anteaters (2-1) opened their
season Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara mini tournament with
victories over Cal State Northridge, 6-2, and Cal State San
Bernardino, 8-5, in the season opener. The Anteaters lost to
11th-ranked UCSB, 5-3, in the second of three games.
UCI freshman Robyn Kaake continued her hot pace in the third game
against Northridge as she scored four times to give her 10 goals in
her first three games as an Anteater.
