McLaughlin leads Sage Hill in shutout against Brethren
Freshman Ali McLaughlin scored two goals to lead the Sage Hill School
girls soccer team to a 3-0 Academy League victory over host Brethren
Christian Thursday.
McLauglin opened the scoring with a goal on an assist by senior
Megan Curry in the 15th minute. About five minutes later, junior Amy
Werblin’s unassisted goal gave the Lightning (6-5-2, 2-3-1 in league)
a 2-0 lead. McLaughlin scored again in the second half with a header
on a corner kick by Werblin. Junior goalie Laura Gordon had one save
as Sage Hill outshot Brethren Christian, 18-2. The Warriors dropped
to 3-7, 2-4.
Newport Harbor shut out
* WRESTLING: The Newport Harbor High wrestling team suffered its
first shutout in the Sea View League in five years, losing, 77-0, to
visiting Laguna Hills Thursday.
Senior Kid Lim (119-pound division) came close to recording the
Sailors’ only win, losing, 10-8.
Newport dropped to 4-6, 0-5 in league, while Laguna Hills, ranked
No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I, remained undefeated at
10-0, 5-0.
DeMille solid for Sailors
* SOCCER: Sophomore Krystal Wright scored in the 64th minute as
the Newport Harbor High girls soccer team avoided a shutout, but
lost, 2-1, to Sea View League host Aliso Niguel Thursday.
Sophomore Jackie Taylor assisted Wright’s goal. But the
Wolverines’ goals in the 20th and 55th minutes were enough. Newport
senior goalie Kara DeMille had six saves for the Sailors (2-14-2,
1-5-1 in league).
Ball wins at Whittier
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High junior Carsten Ball defeated
longtime rival Shan Sondhu, 7-5, 7-5, to win the boys 18s singles
title at the 53rd Gene Jung Whittier Mid-winter junior tournament
Sunday.
The unseeded Ball defeated third-seeded Blake Muller, 6-7 (5),
6-1, 6-1, in the first round before knocking off the Nos. 6 and 8
seeds on his way to the title.
Sondhu, a Laguna Niguel resident and the No. 5 seed, defeated
second-seeded Kaes Van’t Hof, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) in the semifinals,
before Ball upset the Aliso Niguel student for the second time in
seven months.
Ball defeated Sondhu, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, to claim the boys 16s final
in the 101st Southern California Tennis Association junior sectional
championships last June -- his first sectional crown.
Ball will play in the 60th Annual Fullerton junior tournament
beginning Saturday.
