Eagles claim hoops victory

Estancia High’s boys basketball team used a strong defensive effort
to stake out a 28-point halftime lead and cruise to a 53-27 victory
over Westminster in a Golden West League clash Wednesday.
The Eagles used heavy pressure in the passing lanes to limit the
Lions to four points in the first quarter and three in the second to
take a 35-7 halftime lead.
Carlos Pinto led the Eagles (9-7, 1-1 in Golden West League play)
with 20 points. Scott Sankey added 10 points and eight rebounds, Hugo
Escobedo added five points and four rebounds and Mike McDaniels
chipped in with four points and four rebounds.
Seahawks outlast Mustangs
* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Tony Krikorian was 7 of 7 from beyond the
three-point arc and scored a career-high 21 points, but Costa Mesa
High’s boys basketball team couldn’t get by host Ocean View, falling,
57-50, in a Golden West League game.
The Mustangs (9-6, 1-1 in Golden West League play) held a
four-point halftime lead, but were outscored 19-9 in the third
quarter. Still, they cut the lead to one point in the fourth quarter
as Krikorian made a pair of three-pointers before the Seahawks (11-5,
2-0) pulled away.
Jeff Waldron added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs
and Brian Molina had seven points and eight assists.

CdM wins third straight
* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar earned its third straight victory
heading into Pacific Coast League play Wednesday, knocking off
visiting Canyon, 72-63, in a nonleague contest.
Jay Northridge had 18 points and Adam Freede added 15, picking up
the scoring slack for Pancho Seaborn, who sat out a majority of the
first three quarters with foul trouble. Seaborn played the entire
fourth quarter with four fouls and scored 16 of his team-high 19
points in the period.

UCI victorious in opener
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine men’s volleyball team went the distance to
defeat visiting Cal Baptist, 27-30, 30-25, 24-30, 30-15, 15-12, in
the season opener for both teams at Crawford Court Wednesday. UCI’s
Jimmy Pelzel led all players with 24 kills.
Estancia ties Lions
* SOCCER: The Estancia High boys soccer team recorded its fourth
tie and its second in Golden West League play with a 0-0 result
against visiting Westminster Wednesday.
Senior goalie Eddie Rubalcava had three saves for Estancia (4-3-4,
1-0-2 in league). Westminster is now 4-1-2, 1-1-1.
Seahawks shut out Mesa
* SOCCER: The host Ocean View High boys soccer team rudely greeted
Costa Mesa by posting a 10-0 Golden West League victory Wednesday.
Mustangs cruise to win
* WATER POLO: Junior Sarah Bowman scored five goals to lead the
Costa Mesa High girls water polo team to an 11-3 victory over host
Saddleback in the Mustangs’ Golden West League opener Wednesday.
Jessica Steenhard added three goals for Mesa (6-4), while Chandra
Malapira, Allyson Harris and Christine Twohig produced one goal each.
Quyen Nguyen recorded five saves. Saddleback dropped to 5-7, 0-2 in
league.
Eagles down Seahawks
* WATER POLO: Carolina Barnes scored seven goals to lead the
Estancia High girls water polo team to an 18-7 rout of Ocean View in
the Golden West League opener for both schools Wednesday.
Barnes took advantage of her speed advantage to score the majority
of her goals on counterattacks as the Eagles (6-1, 1-0) opened a 15-1
halftime lead. Chelsea Kaplan and Melissa Buchmann added three goals
each and Lauren Mahan came up with eight saves.
Orange Coast splits
* BASKETBALL: The defending state champion Orange Coast College
women’s basketball team used a 12-3 run to start the second half to
post a 69-52 win over visiting Riverside to open Orange Empire
Conference play Wednesday night. Alisa Carrillo led the Pirates (8-7)
with 15 points. OCC’s men’s team wasn’t as fortunate, losing to
Riverside, 71-62, also in Peterson Gym. Aaron Bobik knocked down four
three-pointers to lead the Pirates with 17 points.
Foothill pins Newport
* WRESTLING: Foothill High’s wrestling team earned a 55-24 victory
at Newport in both teams’ first Sea View League meet of the season.
Four Sailors won matches by fall: Victor George (112 pounds), Mike Bates (135) Jessee Marshall (152) and Jess Landa (171).
