The Sowers Middle School girls’ volleyball teams began the 2003-04
season with victories, as each swept Costa Mesa in straight games.

Sixth-grader Hallie Carter led the Lady Vikings with 14 service
points.
She is the sister of former Sowers and current Edison High
standout Lindsey Carter.
“I was really impressed by her poise,” Sowers coach Kyle Morita
said. “Sixth-graders tend to be very nervous in their first
middle-school game but this kid has already played a lot of
volleyball. She’s a great addition to our program.”
Sowers also received strong performances from Mary Madden and
Jessica Crumby, both of whom were also playing in their first game
for Sowers.

Cassidy McCraney’s big serves and the spiking of Natalie Ball
paced the defending champions.
Newcomer Meaghan Vernon provided a spark for the Lady Vikings with
11 service points in two games.
“We were really happy, knowing the kids we had returning, but to
pick up a player of Meaghan’s caliber and add her into the mix was
like having Christmas come early,” coach Kyle Morita said.
Despite the one-sided victory, Morita remained cautious.
“It’s a long season and anything can happen,” he said. “All that
you can do is work hard every day and hope for the best.”
