Sailors’ Jennings is Sea View League MVP

Newport Harbor High senior Alyson Jennings was named Sea View League
Most Valuable Player by the circuit’s girls volleyball coaches,
highlighting five Sailors chosen all-league.
Jennings, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter and setter, led the Sailors to
the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA title match and the CIF State
Division II regional semifinal.
Jennings, bound for the University of Texas, earned first-team
honors as a junior and second-team all-league laurels as a sophomore.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Miller, who has committed to Baylor,
joins Jennings and senior outside hitter Emily Turner on the first
team. Miller was a first-team selection as a junior while Turner
earned second-team accolades last season.
Junior middle blocker Kiley Hall and senior setter Kellie King
each earned second-team all-league laurels for the Sailors (26-7),
who have either won or shared 10 of the last 11 league titles.
Burnette Lion of Week
* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University men’s basketball player Tim
Burnette has been named Lion of the Week by the school.
The 6-foot-7 sophomore post player collected 14 points and 13 rebounds, his second career double-double, to key the Lions’ 74-72
Golden State Athletic Conference win over visiting Cal Lutheran Dec.
13.
He made 7 of 12 field-goal attempts in 33 minutes for the Lions,
who play host to Malone College of Ohio Dec. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Laguna shuts out Sage
* SOCCER: Three first-half goals by the host Laguna Beach High
boys soccer team was all the scoring needed in a 3-0 nonleague
triumph over Sage Hill Wednesday.
Taylor King, Trey Phillips and Joey Lebon all found the back of
the net for the Breakers (2-2-1). Center midfielder Julian
Smith-Newman and forward Tyler Ellis provided sparks for Sage Hill
(1-3).
The Lightning are off until they host Orange Lutheran at 3:15 p.m.
Jan. 6.
Sailors best Chargers
* ROLLER HOCKEY: Newport Harbor’s club roller hockey team jumped
to a 4-0 first-quarter lead and held on for a 7-2 victory over El
Toro Tuesday.
Chase Kelly led Newport with two goals and two assists while
brother Preston Kelly also tallied two goals.
Rory Campbell and Grant Casserly each had a goal and an assist
while Cory Adler tallied a goal and an assist and Jesus Sotelo added
an assist.
VU runners honored
* CROSS COUNTRY: Vanguard University men’s cross country runners
Robert Jones and John Nelson have been named to the Golden State
Athletic Conference All-Academic team, as well as to the NAIA
Scholar-Athlete list.
Jones, an Irish-born senior who transferred to Vanguard from
Orange Coast College, helped the Lions finish fourth in the GSAC and
fifth in Region II. His time of 26 minutes, 32 seconds at the Region
II championships in Fresno was his season best. The marketing major
carries a 3.59 grade-point average.
Nelson, a junior, has posted a 3.67 GPA as a finance major. His
best time was 27:41 at the GSAC championships.
Quartet of Lions lauded
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Lindsay Kaiser and junior Livia Peace top a
list of four Vanguard University women’s volleyball players
recognized for their academic excellence.
Kaiser and Peace were named NAIA scholar athletes, as well as to
the Golden State Athletic Conference All-Academic team.
Lion seniors Sarah Bosch and Jamie Hedin were also named to the
GSAC All-Academic squad.
Kaiser, a libero, led the team with 383 digs and had a passing
percentage of .932. A liberal studies major, she posted a 3.66
grade-point average.
Peace an outside hitter and middle blocker, had 135 kills and 150
digs in 57 games. Studying to be an athletic trainer, her GPA is
3.73.
Bosch, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter with a 3.5 GPA, played in 25
games this season.
Hedin, a psychology major, had a team-best 3.74 GPA. She is an
outside hitter.
Honorees for both lists must be at least a junior academically and
maintain at least a 3.5 accumulative GPA.
