Vikings rout Savanna

Marina High’s boys’ basketball team opened play Monday at the North

Orange County Championships with a resounding 84-46 victory over

Savanna at Sonora High.

Three Vikings scored in double figures, led by James Lambert’s 21

points.

Matt Brennan scored 13 points and Matt Molino had 11.

Host Ocean View earned a third-place finish at the Tournament of

Champions by downing highly regarded Long Beach Poly, 59-55.

The Seahawks were denied a spot in the tournament final when Mater

Dei scored a 85-49 victory over the host school in semifinal round

play.

Ocean View had reached the championship semifinals of the

Tournament of Champions by defeating Cajon, 59-47.

Greg Okwudibonye hit a trio of three-point baskets en route to a

20-point game against Cajon; Matt Sargeant dropped four, three-point

shots and finished with 18 points and Bear Wurts scored eight points.

In earlier pool play, Ocean View had 11 players reach the scoring

column in a 79-43 rout of Paramount.

Okwudibonye had another big scoring night with 20 points and came

up with five steals on defense. Wurts was next in scoring with 17

points and Sargeant scored 11 in addition to finishing with eight

assists.

In other boys’ basketball action, Marina ran its record to 3-0

with a 74-66 victory over host Canyon. James Lambert burned the net

for five, three-point shots and finished with a game-high 31 points.

Matt Brennan, who had three, three-point baskets, scored 16 points

and Steve Becker added 10 for the Vikings.

Marina, which is playing in the Darren Oliver Tournament at

Fullerton High, scored an 84-80 quarterfinal victory over Colony.

Lambert again led the Vikings with 27 points, Jeff DeLaunay posted

20 points, Becker scored 16 and Brennan scored 15 as Marina had four

players score in double figures.

Huntington Beach went on the road to face Western and was saddled

with a 66-60 overtime loss. Brandon McLaughlin scored a team-best 23

points for the Oilers and Brandon O’Bryan scored 12.

The Oilers also fell to Corona del Mar, 57-53, in the consolation

round of the Aztec Classic. McLaughlin scored 20 points and Ricky

Fugnetti scored 13 for Huntington.

In the semifinal round of the La Quinta Tournament, Edison dropped

a high-scoring game to University, 94-92. Pat Feducia’s 23 points

paced the Chargers, Alex Wright scored 18 points and Jeff Golden had

13 points.

In girls’ basketball, Huntington fell to Paramount, 37-23, in

second-round play at the Norwalk/Glenn Tournament. Vicky Batistelli

and Veronica Aragon tied for Oiler scoring honors with six points

each.

The Oilers bounced back to rally past Rowland, 48-43, in a

third-round game. Katia Hadj-Hamou led Huntington with 26 points.

Host-team Rosary defeated Edison, 64-28, in nonleague play.

Valerie Katayama hit three, three-point baskets and led the Chargers

with 17 points.

In girls’ soccer, Kelsey Bowman posted her sixth shutout of the

season and helped keep Edison perfect on the season in a 3-0 victory

over Santiago of Corona in the semifinal round of the South Torrance

Tournament.

In boys’ soccer, undefeated Huntington Beach scored a 1-0

nonleague win over Canyon. Unbeaten Edison was a 5-2 nonleague winner

over Estancia.

In earlier boys’ play, Roberto Zamora scored the lone Huntington

goal as the Oilers rallied to tie host Corona del Mar, 1-1.

Jarred Balbas and Eddie Cholokian each scored goals as host Edison

shut out Santa Ana, 2-0.

In girls’ water polo Monday, Marina edged Rosary, 7-6.

Edison had defeated Marina, 5-4, and San Marino, 6-2, at the Villa

Park Tournament.
