Suspects in shooting of local man sought

Police are looking for three suspects in connection with a

shooting on Saturday of a Huntington Beach man.

The victim, Arnuelo Calderon, 23, was having a conversation with a

friend in the 7600 block of Amberleaf Circle, police said. At around

9:30 p.m., three males approached Calderon, and two allegedly opened

fire after asking Calderon, “Where are you from?”

Lt. Janet Perez said the phrase is “a common statement used by

gang members,” but said investigators don’t know if the shooting was

gang-related.

Calderon was wounded in the right leg and taken to Western Medical

Center. The wound wasn’t considered life-threatening, and the victim

was in stable condition, police said.

The three males drove away from the scene in an early 1990s Ford

Thunderbird with a white or silver stripe on the side and were seen

heading north on Delaware Street, police said. The suspects are

described as 16 to 18 years old and wearing dark clothing.

Teens caught while cashing checks

Westminster police on Monday arrested two Huntington Beach teens

said to have been involved in several vehicle burglaries in Newport

Beach, officials said.

Steven Michael Henley, 19, and Christina Downing, 18, were

arrested in Westminster as they were trying to cash checks believed

to have been forged, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman said.

Investigators searched one of the suspect’s homes and recovered

blank checks, credit cards, golf equipment, personal computers and

cameras, Shulman said. Police have identified a few victims, but are

in the process of locating others, he added.

Detectives believe the thefts occurred primarily between midnight

and 3 a.m.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of such a theft in

the last five months is asked to call Newport Beach police Det. Kent

Eischen at (949) 644-3790.
