Sailors lead wire-to-wire

Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team made a 22-6 lead after

one quarter stand up and rolled to a 52-40 victory over Northwood to

begin pool play of the Valley Christian tournament in Cerritos.

Senior Jillianne Whitfield led the Sailors (3-3) with 19 points to

go with six rebounds and four assists while Victoria Swigart tallied

12 points and 11 rebounds.

Kristi Eddington tallied nine points while Vanessa Miller (four),

Kristi Koon (four), Allyson Stoltz (two) and Ciara Lawrence (two)

capped Newport’s scoring. Stoltz led the Tars with five assists.

Newport, which led the entire game, survived despite being

outscored, 22-10, in the second and third quarters.

UCI remains winless

* BASKETBALL: UC Irvine came within a point of their first women’s

basketball victory of the season Tuesday, but couldn’t slip by host

Portland State, which escaped with a 61-60 win.

The lead changed hands 11 times, but Portland State (2-6) made 13

of 15 free throws in the second half to nab the victory. The

Anteaters (0-5) went to the line just two times in the second half

and missed both.

Christian Callaway led UCI with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while

Kristen Green added eight points, seven rebounds and 14 assists.

Oilers pin Sailors

* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High fell behind Huntington Beach,

36-0, as the Oilers won the first six matches of the dual meet

Tuesday, but the Sailors came back with six wins in the final eight

matches, though Huntington still prevailed, 48-31.

Victor George began a four-match winning streak for the Sailors

(2-1-1) with an overtime, 14-12, victory in the 112-pound weight class. Kid Lim added a technical fall victory at 119, and Eddie

Charcas (125) and Matt Gamble (130) each pinned their opponents to

finish the meet.

The Sailors return to the mat Thursday at Corona del Mar for the

district championships.

Mendoza powers Eagles

* SOCCER: Senior Luis Mendoza scored two goals to lead the

Estancia High boys soccer team to a 2-1 nonleague victory over

visiting El Modena Tuesday.

Alfonso Torres made the pass Mendoza sent around the defense to

give the Eagles (3-3-1) a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

Pedro Duarte assisted on Mendoza’s second goal in the 63rd minute

to increase the lead to 2-0.

Joyce, Loper lead Sage

* BASKETBALL: Senior shooting guard Kevin Joyce scored a game-high

24 points while Matt Loper tallied 17 points to go with seven assists

and three steals to give the visiting Sage Hill School boys

basketball team its fourth win in a row -- a 58-45 nonleague victory

over Rio Contiguo Thursday.

The Lightning (6-2) led by as many as 19 points in the third

quarter, getting scoring contributions from Tim Wilkins (eight

points), Mike Voge (four), Jordan Ogron (three) and Stephen Hancock

(two). Rio Contiguo held a brief 6-2 lead.

Joyce finished with eight rebounds as Sage Hill took advantage of

a 2-3 zone, Lightning Coach Steve Keith said.

“[Loper] has really stepped up and along with Joyce provides a 1-2

punch at guard,” Keith said.

The Lightning face Anaheim to begin pool play in the St. Anthony’s

tournament in Long Beach Dec. 26.

Sage shuts out Vasquez

* SOCCER: Megan Curry and Amy Werblin each scored two goals for

the host Sage Hill School girls soccer team in a 9-0 nonleague

victory over Vasquez Tuesday.

The Lightning (3-2) led, 6-0, at halftime and played much of the

second half in a passing game, Sage Hill Coach Amy Ray said.

Sara Becker, Emily Webb, Kelsey Rose, Laura Gordon and Kendra

Bostwick all added goals.

Bostwick, who played goalkeeper for much of the second half,

scored her first career goal in the first half. Juniors Laura and

Rebecca Gordon -- identical twins -- each saw time in net in the

first half, making two saves apiece.

Freshman Kara Percival played well at sweeper, Ray added.

Mesa loses in triple OT

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa girls water polo team tied visiting

Garden Grove three times, but couldn’t quite gain the upper-hand and

the Argonauts posted a 7-6 triple-overtime nonleague victory. Mesa

trailed, 4-1, at halftime before scoring four times in the final two

periods of regulation.

Sarah Bowman led the Mustangs (5-3) with four goals while Jessica

Steenhard added two. Bowman tied the game at 6 in the first of two

three-minute OT periods.

Neither team scored in the second extra period, forcing a

seven-minute sudden-death OT stanza.

Steenhard evened the score at 5 with a goal from the perimeter

with one minute remaining in regulation.

Mesa goalkeeper Quyen Nguyen made six saves.

Dolphins edge Sailors

* SOCCER: Junior Tayler Giacomaro tied the score in the 75th

minute off a free kick, but the visiting Dana Hills High girls soccer

team prevailed with a goal in the final minute to defeat Newport

Harbor, 2-1, in a nonleague game Thursday.

Newport (0-6-1) had six players -- four starters -- out ill with

flu-like symptoms. The Dolphins defeated Newport, 2-0, in last

weekend’s Mater Dei Invitational.

UCI’s darling dozen

* HONORS: Twelve UC Irvine student-athletes have been named to the

2003 Big West Conference Academic All-Conference team for fall

sports.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes had to

maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, have attained a

sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50% of their

team’s contests.

The Anteater honorees include seven from women’s cross country:

Janelle Del Soldato, Melinda Fuller, Veronica Herrera, Jenna Keith,

Karin Ragudo, Kim Ramirez and Kelli Vanderburg; three from women’s

volleyball: Ashlie Hain, Dana Kurzbard and Jennifer Moser; and two

from women’s soccer: Julie Scheppele and Tara Weldon.
