Protest seemed to stray off the right...

Protest seemed to stray off the right road

After reading the article regarding students and others who were

compelled to protest the fact our new governor repealed the law not

allowing illegal residents to obtain a license (“Crowd protests

Maddox’s license vote,” Saturday), I had to ask myself, on what

grounds did those students and the others feel this decision

warranted a protest? Has anyone informed, these misinformed

individuals that driving an automobile is not a right, but a

privilege?

I am quite certain this fact has not been communicated, because as

I listened to the nightly news, I heard one of our brilliant state

Assemblymen announce on TV that driving a car is a right and everyone

is deserving. Wrong, again, it is a privilege. The fact that the

previous governor decided to put this issue on the table with the

purpose of getting votes was disgusting.

One question to those who are here illegally, what rights would I

have in your country if I were there illegally? My suggestion to all

those who consider this an act of discrimination is to stop the

“victim mentality,” get your papers in order or go back to where life

isn’t so unfair.

I am tired of all the victims who now clog up our society. Does

anyone find it hard to understand that if we do not control basic

rules and laws, we will begin to create a chaotic society? We have

enough trouble keeping track of our ever-growing driving population.

We must have limits.

This whole mess is a perfect example of why it is important for

everyone 18 and older to vote. Only the voters can ensure we elect

individuals interested in preserving the rights of all Americans and

protecting our society. We do not need self-serving politicians whose

sole purpose is attaining that almighty vote at the expense of the

American people.

A holiday thanks to Pilot columnist Smith

I am president of Friends of the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter

and I was out of town but I just got back in time for our holiday

brunch fund raising event and someone told me about an article by

Steve Smith in the Dec. 6 edition of the Pilot (“A chance to give a

little”).

I am so touched and so pleased that he took the time to describe

the life of a child in the shelter and to do it so eloquently and so

beautifully. It is so touching that someone understands and I can’t

even tell you how much we at the friends of the Orange Coast

Interfaith Shelter appreciate you doing that.

May you have a very happy holiday.

DUI listing serves a necessary purpose

I have something to say to Gary E. Dries. Had it not been for the

DUI listings a few years ago, my daughter would have gotten into a

car two days later with her best friend’s grandfather who didn’t even

really have a license because it had been taken away from so many

DUIs.

So, it is a deterrent for parents and I just wanted to voice that.

So there’s one good reason to keep printing them, embarrassing as it

is that’s the way it goes.
