Lions roll to third straight win

Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team, ranked third in the
NAIA, knocked off its second straight Division II opponent, handing
visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills its first loss of the season,
66-41.
The Lions (7-1) limited the Toros (5-1) to 15 points on 17% shooting in the second half, which helped them expand a 35-26
halftime lead.
Kelly Schmidt led three players in double figures for Vanguard
with 19 points and added nine rebounds. Lisa Faulkner finished with
12 points and 13 assists and Lacey Mills had 14 points and seven
rebounds.
Rachel Besse and Lacey Burns each finished with a team-high 10
rebounds.

Three in a row for Sage
* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School used a season-high 19 points from
sophomore guard Debbie Yoder-Lee to post a 54-23 nonleague girls
basketball victory over Vasquez Monday.
It was the Lightning’s third victory in a row after beginning the
season with four consecutive losses.
Sophomore Haywood Wright had 13 points, 11 rebounds, five steals
and three blocks for Sage Hill (3-4). Freshman Kaitlin Tyre added
nine points and eight boards, sophomore Laura Schaefer had seven
assists and sophomore Allison Gonzalez came off the bench to grab
seven rebounds.

Lightning post shutout
* SOCCER: Sage Hill School senior goalie Cesar Arriaga made four
saves to record the shutout as the Lightning defeated visiting
Vasquez, 3-0, in a nonleague boys soccer game Monday.
Zack Milder opened the scoring by cashing in a Conrad Whitaker
assist in the 12th minute.
Richard Gadbois scored without an assist in the 51st minute and
Braden Ross cashed in a Jordan Salinger assist in the 57th minute to
help the Lightning improve to 2-2.
Sage Hill continues nonleague play Wednesday, when it visits
Laguna Beach.
OCC can’t score win
* BASKETBALL: In a game that was postponed Saturday because of a
broken backboard and resumed with 16:56 remaining in the first half
and Orange Coast College trailing, 3-2, the Pirates shot just 38.3%,
falling to Southwestern College, 76-69, in a nonconference men’s
basketball game.
Five players scored in double figures for the Pirates (2-5), led
by 13 points from Jason Garey and Jason Sanford, but OCC shot just
28.6% in the first half.
