Mustangs advance to title game

Sophomore guard Tony Krikorian sparked a third-quarter surge with
three steals and nine points as Costa Mesa High outscored Whitney by
21 points in the second half on its way to a 63-38 victory in the
final round of pool play Friday at the Valley Christian tournament.
The Mustangs (4-0) advance to tonight’s championship game against
La Salle (6-0) at 8 p.m. at Valley Christian High in Cerritos.
Krikorian, who played varsity as a freshman last season,
established a career-high with 17 points and added six steals. Junior
forward Jeff Waldron, a starter on last year’s team, also set a
career-high with 23 points and added 10 rebounds. Sophomore Scott
Knox added 14 points, hitting on three three-pointers, and point
guard Brian Molina dished out 10 assists.

Mesa steals victory
* BASKETBALL: Senior Suzy Trujillo scored a game-high 16 points to
pace the Costa Mesa High girls basketball team to a 40-36 victory
over Dana Hills to finish third in its pool at the Fountain Valley
tournament Friday.
Mesa (2-2) scored eight points in a row to tie the score at 16 at
halftime. Cassey Brick, who tallied seven points, hit a three-pointer
as the halftime buzzer sounded from 35 feet to pull the Mustangs
even.
Judie Akansel tallied seven points while Brittany and Bethany
Vergara each scored four. Ashley Kelly and Deanna Sanchez each scored
one point.

Lightning advance
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team advanced
to the finals of the silver bracket at the San Diego Small Schools
tournament with a 49-29 victory over Calvary Christian of Vista
Friday at La Jolla Country Day School.
Kevin Joyce led the Lightning (4-2) with 23 points and Matt Loper
added 14. But it was the defense of Tim Wilkins that Sage Hill Coach
Steve Keith singled out as the key to victory.

Foothill rolls past Tars
* BASKETBALL: A thin Newport Harbor High girls basketball team
couldn’t hold a 20-17 first-quarter lead against Foothill, which
posted a 65-54 victory in a fifth-place semifinal matchup in the
University tournament Friday.
Jillianne Whitfield led Harbor with eight points, eight board and
five steals. Victoria Swigart and Vanessa Miller each scored 14
points while Kristi Eddington (seven), Allyson Stoltz (six), Maaike
Trobman (two) and Kristi Koon (two) contributed points.

CdM remains unbeaten
* SOCCER: Behind the strong defensive play of Shane Collins, Cory
Azzalino, Parker Ferguson and Dan Marin-Finn, the Corona del Mar High
boys soccer team remained unbeaten Friday, earning a 1-1 tie with
Huntington Beach.
Chris Ringstrom gave the Sea Kings (4-0-1) a 1-0 led in the 39th
minute, but Kevin Fronk scored for the Oilers (2-0-2) on a header off
a free kick with six minutes remaining in the match.
Sage gets in win column
* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill junior forward Katie Puishys scored 11
points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Sage Hill School’s girls
basketball team to its first win of the season -- a 48-21 decision
over Connelly in a consolation semifinal of the Fairmont tournament
Friday.
Sophomore Haywood Wright led the Lightning (1-4) with 17 points
while Kaitlin Tyreadded eight. Debbie Yoder-Lee and Rebecca Hembarsky
each tallied six points.

Newport earns tie
* SOCCER: Using strong play from a backline led by Stephanie
Lambrakis, Erin Hardy and Tayler Giacomaro, Newport Harbor High’s
girls soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against Long Beach Wilson in the
second round of pool play in the Mater Dei tournament Friday.
The Sailors (0-4-1) took the lead on a goal by Krystal Wright,
assisted by Barbara Julian, 10 minutes after halftime. But Wilson
tied the score on a penalty kick with eight minutes remaining in the
match.
Bowman scores seven
* WATER POLO: Junior Sarah Bowman scored seven goals to lead the
Costa Mesa girls water polo team to a 13-5 nonleague victory over
visiting Los Amigos Friday.
Juniors Allyson Harris and Christine Twohig contributed two goals
each, while senior Jessica Steenhard and junior Patricia Schuppert
added one goal apiece.
Senior Quyen Nguyen recorded five saves for Costa Mesa.
Vanguard wins big
* BASKETBALL: Freshman center Kelly Schmidt hit 9 of 11 shots from
the field en route to finishing with a game-high 26 points to lead
the host Vanguard University women’s basketball team to a 91-48
nonconference victory over Rocky Mountain College. The Lions (5-1)
converted 16 of 17 free throws (94%). Rachel Beese and Celilia
Josefsson each scored 16 points for Vanguard.
Eagles falls to Breakers
* BASKETBALL: Estancia High’s boys basketball team floundered
after building a six-point first-quarter lead and was outscored in
each of the final three quarters in a 69-50 loss to Laguna Beach
Thursday in the consolation semifinals of the La Quinta tournament.
