Officer hurt in car crash
An on-duty Costa Mesa police officer suffered injuries to his neck
and back after his patrol car was broadsided by another vehicle on
Wednesday evening, officials said.
The collision happened at about 6:20 p.m. on Del Mar Avenue east
of Newport Boulevard, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Dale Birney said.
Officer Charles Oliver was hit east of the intersection, he said.
The other driver in the collision did not suffer any injuries, he
said.
“It doesn’t seem as if anyone ran any red lights,” Birney said.
No one was cited or charged. California Highway Patrol officers
are investigating the incident, which is standard procedure in injury
accidents involving patrol cars, Birney said.
